Icon5 Allies in sieges - who wins?

Hi, I was just about to lay siege to a town when the Poles (my allies) sneakily appeared from nowhere and laid siege to it. As far as I know, as the Polish forces are laying siege first, they get the town, assuiming they survive - is that correct? I've tried other things e.g. first to get to the plaza, first over the walls, having bigger forces etc but the only thing that seems to matter is who starts the siege. Do I get a diplomatic bonus for helping with their siege?

You have to start the attack, thats all - I.e. you have to select your forces and order them, in your turn, to attack the city.

Even if your allies do all the fighting for you, and capture the plaza before you, you will still get the city.

Even if the Polish do not survive and are completely routed by the city defenders, if you then win the siege by capturing the plaza, the Polish still get the city.

It doesn't matter who starts the siege or captures the city centre, whomever initiates the actual siege battle is the one who captures the town.

So, to make it clear, the one who first assault the city gets it, not the one who first lay the siege on it?

That's right. To put it more clearly, the one to initiates the siege battle gets it.

If the battle-initiating faction gets routed, the faction still gets the city if its allies win the battle in the end.

An interesting hypothetical is if the battle-initiating faction not only gets routed, but completely destroyed to the extent that they have no survivors left after the battle. In this situation, I'm not sure what would be the outcome, since with no survivors, the battle-initiating faction has no campaign-map character to place his flag on the city. My guess is that the defenders remain in control of the city (but with an empty garrison) if the AI ally's turn had already been completed by the time of the battle.

So what about a reward? Do you get anything out of helping them, like a cookie or something?

Your relations improve, and they send you a christmas card every year.

There is a way around this problem, if you really want the settlement, but I would consider it a bit of a cheat!...

When your AI ally initiates the siege, anytime during the battle (before you reach voctory) you can press "Esc" and "End Battle" you and your allies will lose! Thus giving you the chance to take the settlement on the next turn (asuming you then initiate the siege yourself).

I've actually already used this for my advantage .

All I needed was a big allied army besieging a settlement (with a smaller one insine). I sent a small army (the size doesn't matter) and checked the box "control reinforcements on the battlefield" (in this case, reinforcements were my allies). They do all the work, and since I started the attack I get the settlement.

    Muahahahaha!
