Playing 4.0.11. Got whipped as the Romans, so decided to switch to the Germans. Things going better.

I've noticed German Spear Warbands have phalanx mode - but when I activate it (plus guard mode or not), I don't see any difference in the formation etc.

Can someone tell me the function of the phalanx for spear warbands and what benefits and drawbacks it has? How does Guard Mode affect it?
