Default Horn Hill, seat of House Tarly

Horn Hill is the seat of House Tarly, and Lord Randyll Tarly. The strong castle is situated at the top of a grassy hill, with forest on all sides. In the distance, fertile farms can be seen. The woods around the castle are filled with excellent game, making them prime hunting grounds.

Any wishing to speak to House Tarly should seek them out here.

    Residents

    Lord Randyll Tarly

    Age: 37
    Gender: Male
Appearance: Slightly taller than average height, lean but muscular, balding, short grey beard.
Titles: Lord of Horn Hill, Chief Bannerman of House Tyrell

The current Lord of Horn Hill and head of House Tarly, Randyll is not a man to be trifled with. Among the best battle commanders in Westeros and an excellent soldier, Randyll led the Targaryen-loyal vanguard at the Battle of Ashford, inflicting one of few defeats in the war on Robert Baratheon's rebel army. Randyll has a will of iron, putting honour and justice above mercy and compassion. He is cool and calculating, rarely losing his temper. However, he is rumoured to be incredibly frustrated with his son, Samwell. He carries the Valyrian Steel blade, Heartsbane, a sword which has been held by House Tarly for over 500 years.

    Lady Melessa Tarly (Née Florent)

    Age: 36

    Gender: Female
Appearance: Tall for a woman with long black hair and dark brown eyes. Fairly attractive, despite the large ears typical of House Florent.

Lady Melessa is the eldest daughter of Lord Alester Florent and his wife, Lady Melara Crane. She is the wife of Lord Randyll Tarly, and mother of his children. Their marriage is generally a loving one, though originally made for political reasons. Melessa is a kind and compassionate woman, who loves all her children dearly, despite the scorn her husband shows towards their eldest, Samwell. She is also clever with numbers, and deals with the family coffers while her husband is busy.

    Samwell Tarly

    Age: 17
    Gender: Male
Appearance: Very fat with untidy, dark hair and pale eyes.

Samwell, or "Sam" to his mother, is nothing short of a terrible dissapointment to his father, Randyll. In contrast to his father's harsh military attitudes, Samwell likes music and books, and abbhors violence and blood, and his gentle nature has frustrated Lord Randyll for years. He has good relationships with his sisters, but tries to avoid his younger brother Dickon when possible. Despite his utter lack of confidence, he is a very intelligent young man. Rumours persist that Randyll has been thinking of ways to get rid of Samwell for years, held back only by his wife's love of the boy. Whatever his father's opinions, he is heir to Horn Hill as Randyll's firstborn son.

    Talla Tarly

    Age: 15
    Gender: Female
Appearance: A tall, pretty girl, with her mother's long black hair and dark eyes, but without the large ears of Florents.

Talla, despite her young age, is already showing signs of becoming a beautiful woman. More importantly than her looks, she shares her mother's kind nature, and enjoys playing with her brother Samwell, though she does not understand the appeal of his precious books, as she is not a particularly bright girl. However, she has a silver tongue, and is well versed in the pleasantries of court, and their disguised meanings.

    Alanna Tarly

    Age: 14
    Gender: Female
Appearance: Average height, with red hair and a freckled face. She has a short nose and hazel eyes.

Alanna is generally a calm and inquisitive girl, but with a rebellious streak, and she is jealous of her sister's good looks. She is occasionally spiteful, but feels terribly guilty for days after she has done something she knows is wrong. Alanna has inherited her father's cold nature but semms likely to be more intelligent than either of her parents. She loves listening to her brother Samwell playing music, and shares his passion for reading. She can often be found pestering Horn Hill's Maester about any subject that takes her fancy, or riding around Horn Hill with the stablemaster, talking about horses.

    Dickon Tarly

    Age: 12
    Gender: Male
Appearance: Tall and muscular for his age, with medium length brown hair and hazel eyes.

Everything that Samwell Tarly is not, Dickon is. He is the son that Randyll Tarly so desperately craved, even though Sam is technically still his heir. Dickon is lean and strong, good with a sword, and has a taste for combat. He shies away from books and music, things his father has drilled into him as bad, but has a more than ample education, with his father's knack for battle tactics and command. He may have been made into a good fighter, but Dickon is also kind, confident and quick to laugh, with a dashing smile. However, he still does not quite understand why he is rarely allowed to see his sisters and brother. Dickon is currently a squire.

A group of Riders appears. They hold the banners of House Grafton. Lord Vardis Grafton walks near the guard and asks for an audience with Lord Tarly.

The guard bows before Lord Grafton.

"Greetings, Lord. I regret to say that your journey may have been in vain - Lord Tarly has left Horn Hill for King's Landing, to watch the tournament. He has taken his Lady wife, and so there is none present who may speak with the authority of House Tarly. If the need is urgent, I can have a raven sent to him, asking him to return. You and your men will have the full hospitality of Horn Hill until he returns. If not, you may rest here for a time until you must travel on."

Lord Grafton isn't very happy about this message.
''It seems, that this Tournament in King's Landing is very popular. Have you got any idea, when he will return?''

The guard shifts uncomfortably at Lord Grafton's visible frustration.

"Sadly not, my Lord. But I can send a raven asking him to return as soon as possible."

Lord Grafton is a bit frustrated, but soon he calms down.
''Well, I have travelled a bit to see him. Send him a Raven yes. Meanwhile we can stay here, as you said before?''

"Of course, my Lord. Horn Hill is a castle which can withstand the winters - we have many unoccupied houses inside the walls where the farmers may shelter in winter. Your men may use these. If it please my Lord, you may choose a room in the guest quarters of the keep. I can show you to them whenever you are ready, and I will ask the maester to send a raven to Lord Tarly right after."

The guard gestures with his arm towards the open castle gates. Carts filled with goods occasionally come in or out - it looks like market day.

''I would be grateful, if you showed me to one of the guest quarters. A market day, eh?''

The guard walked by his side to guide him through the city.

"As you say, my Lord. Horn Hill is as much a market town of delightful smells and sounds in the summer as it is a thick walled stronghold in the winter."

They travel through the main square, and the shouts of traders selling their wares echo around. The keep is visible higher up the hill, with the main street towards it ahead of them.

"Merchants on their way to Highgarden and Oldtown from Dorne and the Stormlands stop here on the way. Fruits from Dorne, wine from the Arbor, and game from our forests, all end up here."

The guard takes a left turn off the main street, into a deserted road of small but well built wooden houses built very close together. The sounds of the market can still be heard, but more faintly.

"These are the unocupied houses I spoke of eariler, my Lord. Your men may stay in them, and may eat with the castle's soldiers in the barracks."

He points towards a collection of taller buildings a couple of streets ahead of them, visible over the houses.

"Now, my Lord, if you'll follow me to the keep."

In your answer please state the number of regions you have direct control of.
If you accept we will send back a estimated yearly amount that we would both gain from this agreement.

"Old structures are oftentimes the strongest, my Lord. They say the Wall was built over 8000 years ago, and that it is as wide as the Mander and tall as the Red Mountains."

''I have great respect towards men, who can produce such quality. That shows their skill and experience. Kings and Lords come and go, but some buildings can stand forever. The guard inclines his head respectfully.

"As you say, my Lord. Lord Randyll is a man of deeds too. "First in Battle" are the Tarly words. However, I fear he is getting restless. He has seen little of war since the Dornish bent the knee, and those close to him say he is itching for war. He has other concerns too, but..." the guard stops mid sentence and his cheeks flush red. "Forgive me my Lord, it is not my place to say anymore."

They continue along the main street up to the stone gateway into the keep. The iron portcullis is raised, allowing them to continue into the square keep. The thick stone walls and four towers enclose a small stone courtyard and a garden dotted with flowerbeds, with stables against the wall on the left. Several guards man the walls while a stablehand tends to the horses. The far wall is taller and wider than the others, with huge windows stretching from the top to the bottom.

"The Great Hall." explains the guard. "Only Lord Tarly, his family, and honoured guests dine in there, unless there is a feast."

As they head towards the left tower on the far wall, music begins to echo around the courtyard. A grossly fat boy comes into view, sitting on a chair in the shade of the wall on the left. He has a harp in hand, and is singing in a beautiful high voice. The guard stops as he sees the boy. The boy suddenly sees the guard and Lord Vardis, and he immediately stops playing his harp, mid song. He stares at the pair, and his fat cheeks start to turn very pale. He quickly rises from his seat (or as quickly as he can manage) and hastily waddles away.

The guard's face shows a mixture of emotions; disgust, sadness, and a little fear.

"He is Samwell Tarly, Lord Grafton - Lord Randyll's eldest son and heir. The boy is of age, he would be able to speak with you, only...Randyll has forbidden it. He is not to represent House Tarly in any matters, and he is not supposed to be seen by guests if at all possible."

    The guard shuffles awkwardly.

"The boy is a craven. He cries at the sight of blood, and he cries when Ser Clynt, the master-at-arms, tries to teach him to fight. Lord Tarly himself said the boy would be more at home in a dress than a breastplate. For a man with steel in his blood like Lord Randyll, particularly the Lord of a house as old and esteemed as this one, the thought of seeing a boy like Samwell holding Heartsbane is...your pardons, my Lord, I have said too much already. If you will follow me, I will show you to the guest chambers."

Vardis couldn't help himself. He started laughing
''I feel sorry for the Lord. This kind of a Coward is not meant to be an heir. Why don't you just throw him into battle, when a war comes? That is the best way to teach someone how to fight. Then we would see, if he is a man or a girl, but after hearing your story, I think he would rather be a girl. Are there any other embarassing Family Members, that I can't know about?''

"Your pardons, my Lord, but he cannot simply be placed into the middle of a battle. He would only get himself killed, and bring shame on House Tarly. I assure you, you need not worry about the other members of the family."

The two head towards one of the towers and begin to climb the spiral stairs inside. Halfway up, a girl in her early teens is coming down in the opposite direction, wearing a green silk gown. Her long, sleek tumbles down her back. She smiles as she sees the pair walking past, and her dark brown eyes light up.

"Ah, Wysley, it is good to see you. How is your daughter doing?"

"She's getting better, my Lady Talla. Maester Simon has been seeing to her, and he says she should be able to walk again in a few days."

    Her smiles widens further.

"That is good news indeed." She turns her attention to Lord Vardis. "And who might this be?"
