    Default Medieval 2 & Kingdoms crashing - GTX 680

The game keep crashing upon boot saying something about Fatal Graphics Error.

The launcher also gives me a .net 2.0 error, however the launch works (not options tho)

I got the game booted ONCE and I entered the video settings put everything to max and I got the crash again.

    System:
    GTX 680 2GB 301.20
    i5 2500K 4.2GHz
    8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
    650W Corsair TX
    Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H B3

1920x1080 resolution. I have the latest DX, Drivers, .net, Flash etc.

    Me too.
Low framerate more than 6,000 soldiers.
And at the end of the Battle Fatal Graphics Error often occurs.

    i7 870 3.9G
    GTX680
    16GB DDR3
    ETC...

Requirements rather than the high Shogun 2. lol

Medieval2 is a one-horse, early XP game that only uses one core of that i7, everything goes through it before it even sees the 680, and it will only see the first 3.2gb of ram even with 64bit OS. Proved it to myself too many times.

I have in Task Manager seen kingdoms.exe in campaign mode go over a gig of ram by itself forming hordes.
I was pushing the game's limits, and I have Win 7 64bit and 4gb of ram.

Do you have a specific error message that occurs when your game crashes to desktop? Unfortunately the topic has been somewhat sidetracked but if you can provide more clues we may be able to help. Thanks for any answers in advance. Good luck!

Anyone else with a GTX 680 having this problem?

I'm getting a 680 soon and M2TW (with SS6.4) is one of the games I want to play with it, I'd be gutted if I couldn't play it with such a high end card.

mtw2 bottle-necking depends more on the processor than the graphics card. Especially ss w/ turn times etc etc. Just keep your card updated and overclock your main core (the one for kingdoms.exe, also assign it to the overclocked core) and you'll get the best performance possible.

I just installed GTX 680, replacing my GTX 555 and I have crashes with Shogun 2, Empire Total War and Napoleon Total War. Haven't tried MTW 2. I experience three types of crashes:

    1. Blue screen crash (system reboot)
    2. Black screen crash with total system freeze (only power down button works)
    3. Black screen crash with system recovery (not for the game though; game remains minimized and nonresponsive)

#1 usually happens during battles (but sometimes also during menu screens); #2 and #3 happen during the campaign map.

I had no issues whatsoever with GTX 555 on the same system everything else the same (even in-game settings [on ultra])

sounds like you forgot to clean house on the drivers with the old card before installing the new maybe?

    For Medieval2, delete the medieval2.preference.cfg.

The game will rebuild it when you start a new campaign.

NTW and S2, delete the scripts folder.

Done that, no change in GPU behavior.

680 possibly too new for the game for a little bit.

Did it generate a new medieval2.preference.cfg?

Have you tried the latest Beta drivers at http://www.nvidia.com?

The stupid game keeps crashing immediately on boot, I hear the background music though.

While reinstalling, did you reinstall the motherboard drivers?
Have you run Windows Update manually and install all software options while you're at it?

You pssibly have a serious conflict going between Nvidia and Intel in BIOS over graphics settings.

    1. I dont install Motherboard drivers, because I dont need them, nor is there one that is useful.
    2. Uhh yes.
    3. I doubt that, no other game has this issue. And no.

    1. Ok. Go ahead and prove me wrong, which you cannot. (WITH EXCEPTION OF THE LAN DRIVER)
    2. You seem to believe users here are at a level of kindergarten in terms of hardware and computers.
    3. No it isnt the issue, because I had the same ing issue with my 5850 and then I didnt even have the integrated graphics enabled, nor did I even have the secondary monitor plugged into it.
Also I had another motherboard prior to this, with an AMD build. I had nothing integrated, I could still not boot the game, cause it just kept crashing.

I'm not going to add anything of technical value to this thread. But I would like to remind casual users that these Tech threads are manned by volunteer help. I would ask for some understanding on that point and some mutual respect. It is not that we view you as a kindergarten level user - it's merely because we're trying to understand your problem from miles away that we need to ask these questions. I would hope you would understand....

To put it another way - childish tantrums will gain you nothing here. We're trying our best to help you. If you find that you can't get the help you need then move along to another forum. Good luck!
