Well, you can use them after the Marius reforms, can't you? Or is that different in SPQR?

You can only recruit them in Rome, so you would need to capture that first. After the reforms you can create Imperial legions, they arnt as good as the one you can recruit in Rome, but still better than Principes.
First don't use preatorians. They are not a great deal better than your Imperial Cohorts and they cost a hell of alot more to recruit and maintain. Also they are very difficult to retrain as they come only from Rome.
To answer your question, you get them when you capture Rome but if i were you i wouldn't bother with them.

come on man... you have to use those lovely pretorians a few cohorts at least in your faction leadrs legion?
lol
fun, fun, fun
Yeah, I usually use a couple of Cavalry units that follow my faction leader around, and i'll have 2 or 3 Praetorian Cohorts go with my faction leader if I have a campaign planned that i'm preparing for.![]()
Not for me dudes. preatorians are devious, underhanded tools of power, not combat soldiers, in my opinion their no better than auxiliaries. The cavalry is ok and i do use them from time to time, but i would never desicrate my 21st Legion with preatorians.
They are still cool tho![]()
You can make the Paetorians available without needing Rome.
Or play as the SPQR.
The praetorian cohorts are awesome infantry units, the best of all spqr hand-to-hand -fight units in my opinion. You can recruit them after taking rome.
Praetorian calvary units are even more terrible, for their mere appearance will scare enemy infantry nearby.

Praetorian Cavalry is also the best cavalry in the game.
