    Default Summoning 7870 owners!

Could please do some underclock benchmarks, games?

Basically if you could do a 150mhz core donwclock, many notebook fans would be in your debt and giving you rep!

    Why I ask?

These are the specs of the 7970m, same shadder count, same chip, and with that 150mhz downclock.

    Thanks for your help!

I doubt the mobile is just a downclocked version of the desktop variant, most mobile chips are many times less powerful then their desktop counterparts. Too tired to verify that now but im sure someone else here can.

you should read more about mobile cards them. The tdp limit is 100w thus higher end cards like the X70 X80 from nvidia or X970 X950 from AMD are essentially discarded, however the X60 and X850 X870 are the ones that make into high end gaming laptops.

But you are right in one thing the quality of the gpu in mobile lines is better, a much higher binned core and board is necessary.

EDIT: someone put a 7970m in a m15x, 3dmark11 performance gpu score is 5400, that is one good score, and this card can be had in 15'', I would say its awesome

That's a very good score for a mobile chip but given the premium you have to pay to have all that grunt inside a laptop case you would disappointed if it couldn't deliver.

I bought my first laptop 12 years ago now I can't remember the specs but it weighed just over 6 lbs, the battery lasted an hour tops and the graphics came curtsey of Intel's graphics department. The best game you could play on it was Caesar 3, anything more demanding and it would fall over either because the video card was compatible or the drivers weren't updated. Today Intel has gone from bad video ships to below average once Ivy Bridge hits but people forget that while Intel are improving the hardware the software is far behind. In fact the it's been said the last time Intel updated their drivers Noah was still building he's ark.

The benchmarks are not out yet but from what i can tell people are putting it on par with the 5970 in performance. A little more then a downclock...

The results pretty much confirms that the 7970m is a mere downclock and that all things stayed relatively the same. There was a 15% clock reduction and it gives around 86% of the performance that the desktop does. Its really one hell of a performer. Now Im just hoping that we can overclock this little bastard a lot.

BTW it was tested in a m15x with a 920xm cpu, which is a 2.0ghz quad from arrandale a 2009 mobile cpu, quite weak if we compare to what is offered today. Thats why I only got the gpu score.

If you compare it with the last year 6990m (which is roughly the same performance of the 580m one is based on the 6870 with a 20% downclock and the other is based on the 560 ti with another very heavy downclock), its a 63% increase in performance if we go by 3dmark 11. From the 5870m and the 460m (one is a 5770 and the other is a 450), the 6990m and 580m already delivered 50% more performance. Its quite interesting that in terms of power the mobile market is growing steadily and greatly.

Now we just need some games to make the real tests with it.

Well given the pricing scheme on laptops, its supposed to cost around 1500 bucks to have one of those beauties in a 15'' clevo chassis, if you go for aw you are in the range of 1800 in the m17x r4, apparently MSI (around 1600) and Samsung (around 2k) will offer it as well, we should know more about it after the 24th, thats when the nda lifts.

My first laptop was a 14'' lenovo from 2006 that was a good pc kept it for 3 years (its still working btw), them moved to msi for 16'' ex625, terrible chassis but great power, now I have this mbp, Im pretty much satisfied with the HD3000 performance. Sincerely it runs the games that I want to run, and intel drivers are still a shame, however they really improved since the gma 945m that I had.

Im going to sell my mbp and will probably get the lenovo T430u, the S430, vaio Z, or some other ultraportable. Given the HD 4000 performance increase I probably wont buy a thunderbolt egpu so soon.

EDIT: the MXM 3.1 specs are revealed it supports 130w cards now. MXM is a pcie interface that is used on high end laptops, so that you maintain a level of upgrade, meaning you can buy a new gpu and put it there. Jaketh the g73 that you have or had uses a asus proprietary inverted mxm 3 slot, thus voiding you of getting any new gpu for it, however the m15x uses the normal mxm 3 and thus gives the user the ability to keep the laptop longer with palpable gains in performance. You have to respect the cooling solution though, for example the cooling for the m15x is designed around:

    75w gpus

    45w cpus

the user put a 100w gpu in there and it worked. Gotta love some of aw works.

You know that also opens the possibility of the 7990m which we are thinking is a 7950 downclocked, since the mxm 3.1 are already deployed by the new chassis designs from MSI, Clevo, AW, Samsung since those are only companies that deal with high end gaming right now.

My laptop met the floor of my bedroom and shattered the screen and harddrive. 250 dollars for parts replacement

Asus has an accidental damage warranty 1 use only, for 1 year...

    and ouch...

BTW a m17x r4 with a 7970m can be had for 1700, just dont get anything else, but the screen upgrade is quite valid, thus raising the cost to 1850.

I just built a dream system at mythlogic,

    P150em

    HDD: msata PM800 120gb + 2x 512gb PM830
    Screen: Matte 95% gamut screen
    CPU: i7 3920xm
    GPU: 7970m
    RAM: 32gb 1600mhz
    Wireless: Intel 6300

    Price: 4900

Now if we lsiten to reason the system with the base quad, 7970m, 8gb of ram, ODD caddy, screen upgrade and wireless, it comes around 1600, on malibal.

I think this model uses the HM77 chipset, thus allowing all to overclock the heck out of this system

yea 7870 is the best balanced GPU AMD has in their lineup with a lucky overclock it takes on the 7970 and 680 with a bad overclock it takes on the 7970 lol, in a laptop at 150mhz disadvantage it would still be a mean gpu performance is probably fairly close to what you see out of a stock desktop 7850, which is nothing to sneeze at in a laptop for damn sure,

owning a 7970 and soon a 680 i can say this gens gpus while better faster and lower on power consumption are still a bit weak at the high end, 680 is really a 670Ti bumped up a notch and the 7970 is castrated hopefully the refresh this fall will bring some much better designed GPUs, including mobile chips

well Im still hopeful that the card can be overclocked like crazy, the 330w psu that are optional, will be kind of need really, hehehehehe.

Another result is out, this time in a m17x r3:
    CPU: 2920xm - stock
    GPU: 7970m
    RAM: 12gb 1333mhz

3dmark11 P5600 thats the gpu score, I would say some people are quite happy today, heheheh
