Default Shore bases Cannon Battery- And other good stuff...

I have my whines about STW2 and FOTS, but there are some good stuff in this game that I like...

For instance, my one Warrior was battered to below 50% and I had rushed it for repair at my main port. But the port was damaged and unable to make repairs (Drat!). The enemy fleet (4 of them) attacked my Warrior in port for the 1st time, usually they stay away.

On the ship battle screen for the 1st time I saw Coastal shore batterys which was nice. I kept my busted battle ship close under the protection of the guns and between them and my ship we destroyed the whole attacking fleet- Nice. However, the shore battery needs to know not to shoot when a friendly ship is in its fire path!

    There`s other nice stuff though:
Was defending a bridge as I was attacked. The enemy decided to push its forces across the bridge and I decided to meet them ON the bridge, right in the middle. there was an almighty fight. What was kinda gruesome as well as sort of funny was when I zoomed to just under the bridge I could see a few decapitated heads fly down and bounce into the water! Gruesome.

Chosu has been strangely cooperative lately and in my battle against the growing Superpower Kokura they actually joined me in a siege attack. Now I don`t normally attack in sieges unless I have lots of guns because I refuse to make my men climb the walls, but heck, why not let Chosu do the work?

So I attacked, sat back and watched while Chosu and Kokura engaged in a mighty humongous battle while I supported with my lone artillery. The 40 unit thing really makes a difference in the epicness of battles now. I love sitting back in an Allied assault and letting the other guy do the work. I also had a good look at Chosu so I could see what level of improvements he`d developed. There wasn`t even a `do-nothing` bug this time.

    One last one...

Attacked Kokura in a land battle and they had some artillerry. On the field I was about to attack since his arty would hurt a lot, but I saw he was marching forward so I decided to weather his artillery and let him walk forward. He came about half way and then stopped. I waited, he didn`t move. All the time my troops were getting battered by his artillery- And then I realised he`d tricked me into standing still and taking more arty damage than necessary! I had to attack! I dunno if this was intentionally programmed or not, but if it was, it was a smart move by the AI to waste my time and lose me more men! Great stuff.

Yep, the BAI and CAI are very good when they work (which is most times), I just hope it will be improved further with additional fixes for stuff not working right- And properly fixed.

But I find FOTS very enjoyable in general. Well done on that CA.

If the AI attacks your port with a large fleet, sometimes they get stuck on the cove and keep shelling into the mountain...

I've encountered this, too. Was a bit silly. The enemy fleet of about six ships really should have obliterated my two ships. Instead the enemy went into the cove. I pounded them with my two ships while their 6 ships just sat there...they all sank.

Do coastal batteries have a minimum range? At one point, when the enemy fleet got really close to the batteries in the battle, just before they entered the cove, the batteries just stopped firing. I could still do third-person, though.

Playing at Satsuma. I and this motherer declared war on a nearby clan (we are both imperial). I have one and a half stack and I send them all to the enemy cities. My cities have no army left whatsoever. Then this motherer piece of !@#@!#@! suddenly declared war on me and storm my capital when I get stuck in enemy's provinces.

    I lost the game

It is a smart move but I learnt a bloody lesson. Never trust any motherer piece of crap AI.

Was surprised to see gun batteries in naval port battles aswell. But the way it was done was hilariously funny. There was quite a big earthwork in front of every battery which allowed them only to shoot straight over the whole battlemap. So I deciced to let the AI do the shooting and it was even more hilarious. They kept shooting side after side straight into the earthworks some metres in front of them. Has anyone else noticed this?

I did. I had a military port harboring my heavily damaged fleet. I actually won the battle because one gun battery was on the other side of a landmass in the middle of the map and deeply embedded in the mountainside. While the enemy gunboats engaged my ships one by one the enemy 26 gunners went after the coastal gun (which they couldn't hit) and I fastforwarded to victory. Sort of. Should've been defeat.
I salute those who took the Hungarian Phrasebook simply because of the quote!

I`ll admit that on further inspection, there are some real problems with Ship and battery AI. But that wasn`t what this thread was about.

Won`t be long before I`ll be called a whiner who just attacks CA again and my positive threads are quickly forgotten.

    Yup... about in 3... 2... 1.... hahaha...

I find the quality of naval battles good enough (with modding of course). Now I don't know if the ships of that time actually have the capacity to provide fire support to armies inland (read as really inland, not in the shore). I'm going to go with no, but is not a biggie, nothing a mod could fix by the time I buy the game. BUT it's a great mechanic for latter epochs like WW1 or WW2 when naval guns had ranges of several kilometers and could indeed do this kind of things.
