Default UKIP over take LibDems in the polls

Today a tremendous victory has been won for euroskeptics across the country. UKIP, a relatively small but fast-growing political party that seeks Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, has overtaken the third-largest party, the Liberal Democrats, in the latest YouGov/Sun poll. This marks a period of flourishing resentment in the U.K. against the European Union. Are the people of England finally waking up? I damn-well hope so.

From an email to UKIP party supporters:

After many years of hard work from so many people, UKIP has overtaken the Liberal Democrats as the third party in a national poll for The Sun newspaper.

This isn't during the European Election season when we traditionally do well but in the run up to May's local & London elections. This is a significant breakthrough for our party.

Now is the time for UKIP to surge forward and take our place as the fresh choice in British politics. We have the message and the British people are supporting us like never before.
    - Nigel Farage

So, the obvious first question is whether or not these polls are scientific or not. Are they?

I'm pretty sure they aren't the third largest party until they win a real life election that says they are.

The Liberal Democrats are the third largest party in the UK. You must have misread if you believe I was implying that UKIP were that big.

I love the false spin played by every right-wing Eurosceptic that makes it seem as if UKIP are the only anti-EU alternative. I dare not to mention the list of leftist parties who subscribe to the No2EU coalition lest it make it look like Nigel's rabble of toffs seem like a single-issue party of aristocratic bourgeois idiots in suits.

The thread title got me a little excited until I realised two things: it is a mere 1% take-over and it is an article published by The Sun. If there ever were a "flourishing resentment" against the European Union I would imagine there would be no "43%" or "32%" above your over-dramatised statistics.

Down with the toffs, I say! Champagne and prawn sandwiches, anyone?

UK is the only sane choice for right wing Euro-sceptic voters.

Except during the last election, when for some reason, the party was hijacked by Geert Wilders fans.

you give UKIP to much credit, implying that a hijacking was necessary, they have always been a richer BNP in nicer suits.

Why is that? Is that because they don't want open door immigration?

The poll seems dodgy. Labour have a 11% lead on Conservative? Really?

Racist UKIP members don't have the balls to join the BNP, those disappointed with Mr Farage's regime change have moved to the British Freedom Party , as I understand it.

    How is this news?

I guess it sows that Nick Clegg really is a crappy leader.

    Good news

(unfortunately, the UKIP support isn't clustered geographically and instead is spread across the UK...this means that, unfortunately, in our (undemocratic?) FPTP system they are unlikely to get any seats in parliament unless they get a seriously high % polled. They had the same problem in the last general election where, despite getting a large number of votes, they did not win any seats)

Not particularly surprising. Might even see a Tory-UKIP Coalition next election.

Woah woah everyone calm down here. They got 9%, which is 3.5 times smaller than Tories in second. This does not show UKIP is surging forth and the UK is poised to abandon the EU, nor even that Euroscepticism is particularly on the rise these days. All this really shows is the Lib Dems have totally collapsed as a credible party as a result of this coalition.

This poll shows a Lib Dem defeat, not a UKIP victory.
