    I believe that is hardcoded.

Though, I could imagine some very creative modder coming up with a way for, say, if you lose enough knights over the course of the game, eventually you might get a unit of reinforcements to appear at your capital or something. But obviously you would need to "lose" more than the 120 knights or so, to make up for the fact that knights could still die once they have lost their horse in the battle, if you know what I mean.

Unless you mean you gain a knight in the battle itself. That is definitely impossible, I would imagine.

I think he means that the horse and the rider must be killed separately. So if the horse dies in battle, the knight should be able to continue fighting on foot.

I remember some RTS game that implemented something like this. I think it was called Fate of the Dragon where the horse and soldier were separate units purchased separately, and had separate hitpoints.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be possible.

    Would be nice though.

I wonder if the first thing I said would be possible, though...Probably not, but who knows.

In the first Medieval Total War it was present I think, I don't remember if it was in the original game or mod specific, but at the beginning of the battles, at the deployment phase, you could select your cavalry units and choose if you wanted them mounted or dismounted, and the game would transform the mounted units in the dismounted version.

As a former horse rider I can tell you that once the horse dies, in most cases, the knight will be either maimed or will die as well, for these two reasons:

    A) A lot of the knights were strapped to their saddle with their legs, so they won't be thrown off the horse during a charge and can concentrate on lunging their lance or slashing their sword at enemies, and steering the horse with their legs. Hence, when the horse died, he'd usually crush the knight under him, or at least crush his leg and thus rendering him unable to move (At the very least, if not dead)
    B) When a horse dies and falls and you're thrown off it (And I've been thrown off a horse before), it's very hard to imagine that you, as someone who wears extremely heavy armor, is surrounded by enemies, and is immensely tired from a long battle, will survive being thrown off your horse. The minimum is being unconscious, honestly.
