Hey guys I have a friend that plays this and other mods and he thinks it is totally acceptable to cheat to win. I totally hate watching him do it and was wondering what your thoughts on the matter are.

If someone plays RTW in a way that is different than the way that you play does that make the game any less fun for you?
I think you should not care about how other people enjoy the game. Furthermore, it is a single player game with little competitive value.
What he does in his games does not affect any one of us and would have never been known to any of us until you made this thread.
I predict that eventually he will become bored. At that time he will either move on to playing the game without cheating or he will move on to a new game. Either option solves your dilemma. If he decides to play legitimately, you will have your chance to instruct him on finer strategies. I believe you already want to do this and he is ignoring your input in favor of `auto_win and so on.
If it makes him happy then that is good. If it makes you unhappy then you should ask yourself why. It certainly does not infringe on your experience unless you allow it to.
I hope this illuminated the matter for you somewhat.

I find it fine if people cheat when new to a game or mod but after a week or 2 they should really be playing the game legitimately
For me it's very simple - the answer is in the word.![]()
The only solution is to break his fingers. If, after they have healed he tries to cheat again, break them again until he learns!
Note, I am kidding, but as Ur Lord says, it's cheating, but hey, if it makes him happy...

Been thinking on this and would add....
Someone who cheats others should be shunned and pilloried, if not exiled or jailed; but someone who cheats themselves should be pitied...
Cheating on a game is just cheating yourself as someone already said.
But, I must admit to doing it in a Roman campaign....I was fighting campaigns in Iberia and Greece and decided to block off barbarians (can't remember which faction probably Belgae) at chokepoints in Northern Italy.
After beating the seemingly endless full stacks around 20 times I noticed all I was doing was recycling the same 2 legions over and over and doing the same battles over and over by maintaining my full stacks at the chokepoints by retraining - total stalemate there. In the end it seemed a bit pointless so I just left 2 or 3 units at those points and did auto_win for a while.
It seemed justified to me so i could spend more of my precious time having fun in Greece and Iberia.
Well, I know you can justify anything to yourself if you try![]()
It depends on the situation. If you get some fun by cheating, then it is ok. Acceptable or not is up to you to decide.
But often, a game is created so that everyone have to play fair to enjoy it. In a historical strategic game, making your faction too powerful so unrealistic to win easily is most often not funny at all.

I love this mod, but every time there is an update i have to start ALL over again. I do Cheat to get things going then stop. I Don't have that kind of time to invest in this game.
Things I trust more than American conservatives:
Drinks from Bill Cosby, Flint Michigan tap water, Plane rides from Al Qaeda, Anything on the menu at Chipotle, Medical procedures from Mengele
It's a personal preference, I guess. It's not like you're cheating another person, just a pitiful AI that is already so pitiful I don't know why you'd have to cheat anyway. After my initial Vanilla cheating days I just started feeling sorry for the dumb AI and decided to give it a break and play fair.

i must confess that i have resorted to 'auto_win'-ing the long strings of inconsequential battles that always seem to happen to me.
other than that, i do cheat in some playthroughs of this if its just to relax after a day at work. If i wanted to play properly, i would and i suspect your friend is the same.
Just cos people cheat doesnt mean that they cant play the game properly.
Whatever makes the player happy. It is totally up to the player just because you view it as cheating does not mean a thing.
It is personal preference

I understand what you guys are saying on it being a personal choice... its just that he keeps doing it and then thinks that if we could play against each other he would win... I also cheated with the vanilla game for awhile but it just got boring destroying everyone and I also came to the conclusion that in history there was no what to cheat... The saddest part is he can't win without cheating. I told him i would give him $20 if he could win and not cheat and he cant do it.
he just irks theoutta me
Can I add a small suggestion here?
In the real life all the great states are cheating!!! Think about UE and USA governements:
- Are your banks failing? Well, add_money!!!
- Do you have to fight some silly wars around the world, while your citizens are losing their money in the banks, and you cannot add new taxes? well simple: add_money!!!!
- Your public debt is becoming a monstrosity? Well, no problem!! add_money!!!!
- You want to maintain an enormous beaurocracy and you cannot? the same: add_money!!!!!
- Do you want the greatest army in the world, and you do not want to increase the taxation? It is simple: add_money!!!
- The Romans were the first to do this, they used massively the so called 'cheat' add_money, they increased the quantity of money coined, decreasing the content of gold and silver in the coins, doing this they discovered the Inflation: half measure of grain in the second century was worth half denarius, at the times of Diocletian half measure of grain was worth 100 denarii!!!!! add_money = Inflation!!
CA was too Reganomic moralist and they did not include the inflation in the game, but add_money in the real history is not cheating! Instead it is a political choice! A state prints more currency than the economic growth of the country, doing this, the state produces Inflation, but this is a political choice and sometime it could even help the economy!!
If CA had added the Inflation mechanics to the game, the so called 'cheat' add_money would cease to be a cheat, and would became an interesting aspect of the game!!!![]()
