So the hint will be obscure.
A lightweight fighter designed in country that, in the time period, had least need for such plane, and wasn't known for building light fighters...
Well your hint indicates we're talking about the USA. They were far away from any potential enemy and therefore did not need such a fighter. Furthermore we can see in the background that the earth is flat, so it's definitely America. Also, we're obviously talking about the mid-40s. A quick search led me to the Bell XP-77 with the following image shown on Wikipedia:

And I must say it looks quite similar.
What I don't get is how they'd avoid the tail touching the ground during landing and take-off. I get most of the weight is in the engine, but still... :O

I suspect that the center of gravity was way forward on this thing, after all, over half of its empty weight was the engine.
