Kendra Smith - Five Ways Of Disappearance

Proud owner of this rare masterpiece from 1995 of Alternative by the Paisley Underground iconic figure Kendra Smith, a Nico of the 1980s.
The album's music reminds me of Velvet Underground, The Doors and Jefferson Airplane (later Jefferson Starship), Marianne Faithful, Patti Smith, Blondie and even Nick Cave and PJ Harvey.
Nonetheless is absolutely Kendra Smith's unique art, a much underrated and widely unknown genious. Every single song of the 13 tracks album is a jewel.

So I listened to some Cole Porter the other day, and so many of the comments section had some "viral influencer" breathlessly foreshadowing a cover of Lover For Sale by GaGa and Tony Bennet. This "stealth"
marketing is so bloody awful, and can't make up for a subpar product with me. Then it popped up in the suggestions queue...so I clicked.



I think Gaga can sing a bit, she's not awful to listen too, but her "own" songs aren't very original and taking on this song which Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday sang is asking for comparisons to be made and she can't live in that company.

Bennet was several grades above GaGa as a singer, he had a lovely smooth voice and I'd say he's only below the top tier of crooners (say Martin and Crosby), and while he's more technically accomplished he lacks Sinatra's huge charisma. These days his singing is a crusty remnant, its nice to hear him giving it a shot but he's worse than GaGa. I don't mind voices with "character", i love Louis Armstroigs rasping rattle, but its got to have something, power or depth. These days Bennet's voice is a memory.

The song is a story of course and its up to the singer to tell the story, well Billie Holiday owns it. Extremely sad and bitter version. Ella Fitzgerald (it ges almost without saying) performs it perfectly, incredibly marrying technical perfection, strength and character.

I listened to a few versions by more recent artists and while this arrangement has lovely instrumentation lyrically its a waste of time and not in the top 10 versions I've heard. A mate used to do a passionate rock version, it helped that he was a partial wreck and alcoholic, and had a fine voice-Safari 500 could have been anything.

So yeah sucked in by viral marketing to hear a version of a great song that didn't really need to be recorded. Its not just Hollywood that's run out of ideas.

Working from home I am finding a lot of ambient music helps with repetitive editing and data analysis. Both Blade Runner soundtracks are getting a workout, as is Music for Airports by Eno.



Some people find this like water torture, I find it very sustaining.
