Default Ships show up in land battles!

It's true. My stack landed on hostile soil, got immediately attacked by defending troops, and when I got into battle there they are:

It was quite cool. Although.. when I used the bombardment in battle, they didn't show any actual firing animations, there was only the sound of their guns firing. Still, makes you hopeful for a real navy-army collaboration in the future.

Indeed, I noticed this as well and it was a nice addition

I suppose you guys are using the debug camera or are not on Restricted view.

I`m on Restricted view which means I sometimes can`t see the ships at all. But sometimes I can, just very far away. I don`t see the gun flashes, but I sometimes see smoke.

That`s good enough for me- I like realism and it`s why I stay in Restricted view. But it`s nice that the ships are actually there.

Yes, I saw it in my first battle with naval support and it's cool. But what I cannot understand and is unrealistic is, that in naval battles ships have range limits. But in naval support they have unlimited range. Do they use another cannon or other shells, or wut wut ??
We the willing, led by the unknowing are doing the impossible for the ungrateful, we have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

I`m going to say they are shooting high like `lobbing` so that`s why they have a further, but inaccurate, range in artillery fire.* But lobbing should make the range shorter, shouldn`t it?

*Agh, if this was a more modern game like set in WW1 or 2 I`d say spotters enable the guns to `blind` aim to coordinates, but seeing this is set in the 19th century before radios and it`s CA TW fantasy world where they mix fact and fiction, it`s really hard to justify it with a reason. I don`t even think they had smoke flares at the time.

They could be using higher poundage guns.

The point is that is has not been there since Rome.

Anyway, I never noticed but I am quite impressed.
Does it factor in what ships, and how many?

The difference with Rome was that the ships were NOT 3D objects. They were 2D, neither did they have any real function except to show you that what was happening on the Campaign map was part of the BAI map, which was nice. But that`s all.

We had this feature in RTW they didn't do anything but it was still cool (it has not been a TW game since though). I am definitely enjoying this feature and hope its here to stay in future TW titles. Maybe at some point we will get amphibious assaults Troy style or naval support from the ballista and onager of quinqueremes. Although the naval support distance would be a lot less it should still be possible.

Recent battle with very close naval support

On the topic of Naval support, is there anyone that uses Area? I only use Focused.

I mainly used focused as well.

I noticed this as well TC, seeing my 8 or so ships lined up was pretty neat.

I use area only when the supporting navy is all ironclad. Then they have a really tiny bombardment area of 35, which is too tight of a grouping that makes most of the 48 shells go into waste.

I use area when firing on fortresses I'm attacking. The AI scrambles around but stays in the fort so area fire is pretty effective. the trick is to hit them without hitting your own troops, but even that isn't too bad.

When I absolutely don't want the AI running out of the bombardment circle, I use area.

Firing at 45 degrees gives max range. Anything more or less decreases range.

I just gotta wonder why they're all in that tight line formation. It would have made more sense if they were in column formation with their broadsides pointed inland, or even if they were just spread out.

Yes, it's a bit better than Rome (or Medieval II, I believe), where you'd get a bunch of generic 2D ship images regardless of your fleet's composition or size, here it shows your exact navy.

I respectfully disagree, one could chock up those extra ships as transport vessels, not to mention it looked like a real formation instead of this "all in a line according to size" bit. Plus you have to consider, if we had it in Rome...

I agree that your navy's formations in Fall of the Samurai are quite wierd, but I found it more jarring to have the same ship models representing every culture's navy. I might be missremembering, but I believe you'd always get models of drakkar type ships in Medieval 2 for example, even when you were playing a muslim faction.

On the whole I'd still have to say that Rome and Medieval 2's engines handle campaign to battle map fidelity better, though; and the Warscape engine is just now starting to catch up.

CA often chops things that worked well in previous games for no reason, for example emerging factions in Medieval 1.
