    Default I Love How...

...with THREE provinces, with good upgrades, markets, ports, etc., I can only seem to maintain a 1-stack army before my income goes sub-800.

Yet the AI, with only ONE province, sometimes with barely any upgrades at all, can somehow manages to field an entire stack of Samurai units and MORE!

Just what the hell!? How does that make any sense? Doesn't matter if I'm playing Normal or Hard, it's the same scenario, a bit worse on hard when the AI is on a declare-war-spree.

The reduced upkeep + the increased income for AI probably helps a treat (and IMO one of these features should be removed, they dont need that much help) Also, I'm not totally sure how the converting Ashigaru to Samurai mechanic works but it may be broken and still only cost the AI the amount of an Ashigaru. I find this combination of disasters would be enough to have the resulting scenario.

And I agree. This is bollocks and I dont expect to see it in the next title.

Got a love those secret gold reserves. The main objective of the ai is to defend and expand at the limits the game will allow.Sadly the higher the difficulty the more buffs they get.

I don`t see that problem on Normal or Hard, only On Legendary (which is Very hard).

I notice that the CAI is fast straight in doing stuff. He`ll make trade with whoever he can, then build the cheapest armies and get them as big as possible. If he has an Agent, he`ll embed them so he can take you on with more experienced troops. But most of the time (if you use a spy near to see) you`ll notice his troops are just raw recruits- Not as impressive as it might seem from afar. You can beat him with a smaller army as long as you get an Agent in there and use your Navy as support.

All you need to do is right before you hit `next turn` you must do EVERYTHING. Increase Tech, Diplomacy, trade, etc and it isn`t so hard.

If you sort out your finances and whatever right you`ll make as much as he can. I find that hard is just about equal (but becomes too easy later once you capture a few provinces).

It is only on Legendary that I find the AI manages a ridiculous amount of troops from seemingly nowhere, but I guess he has a massive cash boost. It`s a real challenging level which in FOTS I just keep getting beaten on.

Just reminds me why I play on normal. Has nothing to do with skill, just how many units you spam with how much money you have and for the AI it's not any more skilled, just given cheats.

AI gets huge bonuses to make it semi-competitive.

The AI totally does cheat in that department.

I have routinely been outgunned (But not outwitted) by one province clans while I myself have conquered half of Japan.
It's usually not a problem, but it can get supremely annoying when a minor clan you barely noticed start attacking your undefended cities with a huge stack from out of nowhere.

I can imagine CA was unable to fix CAI so they went like lets just give AI massive bonuses (cheats basically) so they stack spam the player and hope he will be to busy to notice how CAI sucks.

    Don't preorder games!

These TW games have no AI whatsoever. Wondering why the AI-programmers get paid.

I wish you would explain yourself better.

There is an AI in there, this is clear. Tell us exactly where the problems are as you see it. Sweeping blanket comments is not doing you any favours.

Oh look, you're sub-800 and didn't actually play the game at all, you just sat there. Not to mention those are all ashigaru units. Mind giving us some pics of the AI? I wonder what their armies look like by now...

I remember there being more samurai in their stacks, but the point is taken.

I decided to mess around with Nagaoka just on normal difficulty to see how much of an income I could get in a year. It just doesn't work like S2 does but it's probably more realistic?. I looted 2 provinces, sold military access to anyone that I could, purposely killed my daimyo and 1 general and scuppered my navy to cut costs. At about the year point I've run out of things to build due to the techs taking a while to learn. I got up to the third level of modernisation. Basically the shogunates control the right of the map and imperials control the left. Obviously this wouldn't work as well at higher difficulties but it's good to know the possibilities.

I had to try it just for fun.

The point of legendary is you're supposed to be outnumbered. Fortunately the AI is really stupid when attacking castles and if you stick a levy on a wall chances are it'll rout the AI (there are also insane demoralizing penalties when climbing up a wall for some reason). So you just have to hold out and use your superior tactical know-how to win.

    Also, Bow Kachis.

Lower recruitment/building prices + lower upkeep + AI keeps taxes on highest possible + less unhappiness factors.

In my fots Nagaoka campaign, I expanded to 6 provinces (including Sado with the gold mine) and upgraded most of my money buildings to the prevailing limit allowed by the existing techs. I had one full fully modern army and a half stack mix of traditional/levy units. My navy comprised only one wooden frigate and three wooden corvettes. At one point, I was making less than 1000 kokus a turn. I noticed a hostile clan had placed a trade embargo on me, but it shouldn't be much because trade with them is minor. It seems you need to upgrade money buildings in fots to the max as much as possible to field two full stacks early on, which is the minimum number you need imo if you're facing two or three fronts. The other fronts are covered by allies.
