So, I've been hearing a lot of complaining about the rail-roads, and I just think: why?
If you actually look at what they did, its great!
Here are a few of the points I've heard:
-Pre-set locations
-Not enough effect
-No rail-roads on Islands
-Takes ages to build
-Boats are better
-AI doesnt use them enough
Well, I do agree with some of those points (I also think that, in some cases, boats would suit you better than rail-roads, and the AI is really crappy with them in the beginning), but I don't think they're all right. Allow me to explain:
-The locations that the rail-roads follow, are historically accurate, which adds to the realism of the game (imagine if rail-roads would be like roads, wouldn't be much fun in that, wouldn't it?). They also set a nice route of attack along which to advance.
-If you advance along a railway, and actually do something to try and use them, you'll find out that they're pretty useful (especially if you specialise towns, because, for example, I had a town, which I crowned ''military capital'' of my clan. It had a rail-road close by, which meant that I could rush down specialist troops down to the front.)
-With the current movement system, railways wouldn't be useful on islands. I even think you need at least 3 stations for the rail-road to actually make a difference. The islands are just to small (use ships ;D)
-7 Turns isn't that much, with the short turns FotS offers you. Don't really see a valid point here.
As much as I like the railways, I would like to see the AI thing worked out, and maybe allow for new technologies to be researched so trains go faster (new train types(hint-hint modders)
