I stopped after the first two words. "Sudan says....." Meaning this is all coming from Sudan. I am going to wait until this is confirmed.

The Security Council has already demanded the withdrawal of South Sudanese troops from Heglig, so you can shelve the notion that the West is conveniently ignoring this.

While you are right to condemn South Sudan's actions, just keep in mind that Sudan is doing the same thing. Lately, Sudan has been aerially bombarding locations in South Sudan and making small-scale raids into the country. This move by South Sudan is a response to that. I'm not trying to legitimize the conflict, but it is not as one-dimensional as you are implying.

That article is several days old. It's confirmed, and now Sudan is going to be initiating a counter-attack: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-17707977

South Sudan 'repulses Sudan troops' at Heglig oil field

It's not independently confirmed at the moment, but there was definitely a battle of some sort there. The two seem to be drifting closer and closer to outright war...

This has been on the cards for a while, the separation settlement was poorly designed for long lasting peace, as it placed the economies of both countries in the hands of the other.

By whats going on by the past couple of days and weeks I don't doubt a bigger conflict will grow from it. South Sudan has claimed Sudan fighters have hit areas of South Sudan, aswell as raids by ground forces. Hence why South Sudan has taken control over that oil town.

Someone ed up while drawing the maps.

Why can't there ever be a peaceful secession?

for the same reason the confederated states of america was not allowed to secede peacefully, for the same reason Cyrenaica isn't allowed to secede from the rest of Libya

the Federals under Lincoln's administration didn't make slavery a key issue of the civil war until the Gettysburg address some 2-3 years into the conflict, when there was a chance that Great Britain would side with the Confederates and Lincoln needed the moral high ground for the anti slavery British; the primary issue was always about 'preserving the Union'.

Cyrenaica never seceded. It only declared its autonomy, that doesn't mean that Cyrenaica wants to become its own country, that means it wants Libya to be a federation like Germany or the US.

Hmm nope, it wants to turn Libya into a Confederation; the proposal was that each region would control everything (including tax income) except military and foreign affair (basically a defacto independence). Now I am not sure how the heck federal government is going to survive without a stable tax income, but that was what Cyrenaica proposed so pretty obviously it is a move to keep all oil money in Cyrenaica instead helping the poorer regions.

By the way that was the reason why Yugoslavia failed.

Oh a confederation. Okay then I don't agree with it. I only agree with the federation form of decentralization.

    Big business is worried.
The south has the oil, The north has the means of transporting it.
    One is blocking the other.
Oil prices and supplies are in a delicate situation.
With Libya not up to speed, Nor Iraq, also Nigeria having a few problems, With the ban on Irans oil to start very soon.
Things may get a little sticky. Mr Obama will not want to see 6$+ a gallon at the pumps during the election run up.

Also the EU is going to end up in serious trouble with its austerity campaign combined with high oil prices.

But Australia can only produce that much daily; you need more sources to provide market more oil at once.
