Default Is it possible to convert religion?

I see that the CPUs do it, does anyone know how I can convert? I get all these messages that such and such clan has converted to Christianity. Thanks

I thought you could only build the Nanban trading port after you converted?

It'll show up like those event choices you occasionally get. It's more related to location than anything iirc, starting with Kyushu and the Shimazu and moving inland from there.

Edit: Ninja'd with a much better answer. Post above me explains it quite well.

No I think you get the european bla bla event then you can choose to build it. The port it self spreads Christianity

You will get a message when exposed to christianity either through a conquest of a region belonging to the a clan of that religion where the majority of the population is of that faith or when western trade is opened which appears as a dilema, which you either accept trade which triggers more quickly from the west side of japan and move eastwards so if you plan to play a campaign as a christian faction id recommend a shimazu as they are the first to encounter the traders dilema. Once the criteria is met you have the option on you family menu and in the top left corner is an icon which you select to change religion. This has the implications of a honour penalty for your dynamo which can cause big problems if your generals have poor honour to start with, and on top of that any regions you own will suffer huge penalties to the repression of them resulting in rebellions untill you have converted the populace.
