In one of the guides I just read here, someone said he always has a certain number of "locked slots" for so many cavalry and so many infantry and so on. I don't know what that means or how to do it. Can someone explain, please?

I'm unsure what this means aswell but I'll have a go. Does he mean he can only recruit a certain amount of units untill the unit card goes red where he can not recruit anymore.
Or perhaps it could be that theirs a number saying 4 on the unit card and you can only recruit 4 that turrn?
Was he talking about multiplayer or singleplayer?

He was talking about how he sets up his armies -- not on the field but in the lineup where you can group them and that sort of thing. Don't know about single or multiplayer.
give us a link of the guide...
Ah, well if he was talking about multiplayer, it will be as jameseagle15 said - some units only allow you to use a limited number of them because they are usually very powerful (e.g i think the limit on longbowmen is 4, maybe less). I'm still slightly baffled though.

It could be some fancy way of saying he always reserves a certain amount of cavalry units and a certain amount of infantry units in his army compositions. For example, he may always have 6 cavalry units, no more and no less, thus having 6 "locked slots" for cavalry.
Maybe he has a minimum requirement for how many of each type he'll have in his armies? Like he will start creating an army with 4 cavalry, 6 infantry, and 2 archers and then fill the rest in with whatever?

My apologies: now I can't find where I read about "locked slots". But I think you're all probably right. The whole thing sounded as if he had a certain formula (8 of this and 4 of that) and "locked slots" was just the way he referred to it. Sorry to waste your time.
