Default Fall of the Samurai/ No Bayonets?

I can't recruit Marines, so I used the custom battle and I noticed that the Marines don't have bayonets.

I know that swords were used by both sides as were guns, but did the Marines of Britain, France and the US use swords too?

If not I believe that there should be an update to give them bayonets.

Also I have researched Foreign Affairs and have a trade port, but what is this event that needs to occur that is preventing me from recruiting Marines?

This has been asked several times before. Bottom line is that CA ran out of time to put bayonets in and will not be adding them.

For the second question, other countries need to ask you for permission to trade before you can upgrade your trade ports.

    Oh, so no bayonets eh?

I hoped that they would've added that in in an update.

    Thanks for the info.

I am still a little confused as to how I engage in trade with them, My diplomacy panel says I am already in trade with all three countries, France, Britain ext.

I comes up as an event that will ask for full permission for trading which will allow you to get foriegn power bonuses.

To be more specific, trade with the foreign powers only occurs as a game mechanic - not accessible in diplomatic options. You require a trade port and you also need to research the appropriate techs as well to get access to the ironclads and foreign units. As already stated in other posts, you will be approached by a foreign power about establishing a trade mission once you have the correct level of trade port and techs researched. And while you may only "ally" with one of the three foreign powers, all three will trade with you - they're not fussy. Note that GB will only ever approach the Imperial clans, France the Shogunate and the USA will approach both.

There is a retainer that is called bayonets, it gives you +1 or +2 to all the melee damage of all troops under your command, but thats about it.

You know what would be great?

If some mod would sticky something about this. Just so the millions of bayonet threads would go away.

    They will never go away......ever.

I love bayonet charges, and my Japanese soldiers could do real Banzai charges with them.
Swords are ok but I always love to make a final stand atop a mountain with 30 or so men Bayonet charging straight into several ranks of enemy troops.

Imagin how sweet a small group of holdouts in a castle would look when they group up for a mass attack on an enemy Gatling position .

While lame that there are no bayonets I think the sword fighting in fots isnt bad plus sworsd have way more class than a gun with a knife slapped on it what dishonorable coward would use such a pesant wepon?

Maybe the swords, are more "honorables", but the bayonets historically were used by the modern army of Japan, and, obviously, by the Western powers. Also appearing in the official image:

Hopefully take out a patch or an update that includes them.
