    Default Stuttering problem with S2FOTS

    Hello,

I'm having a problem with Shogun 2 and sorta with my whole system actually, but I believe it started with Shogun. I'll be navigating the strategy map, go to scroll to one side, and the whole game will freeze for about 3 or 4 minutes. The hard drive does alot of trashing during that time, not certain why. After I encounted that, it would take upto 5 mins for battles to load, long load times just clicking on towns or cities.

The odd thing is, after I exited Shogun, the whole system started to become sluggish. Windows would be slow to open, accessing files would take forever, etc, etc, etc.

Now, I'm fairly tech savy and I've run a variety of tools to try and locate the problem. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled every single driver available for my system. Verifyed the Shogun 2 files through Steam and so on. I ran a virus scan, found nothing, checked for reg errors, pretty much everything, you name it.

I'm basically out of ideas, hence why I'm here. The system has pretty much become unplayable, now every game I play is stuttering all over the place. So I'm not sure what the problem is.

My system specs are as follows:

    Intel i7 950 at 3.06 Ghz
    6 GB of DDR3 RAM
    1.5 TB HDD
ATI Radeon 5770 with 1 GB of VRAM

I think that pretty much covers it, any help at this point would be great. Thanks.

try checking your hdd for errors and use a disk defragging prog like auslogics or smart defrag2.

When I had the issue, I went in to my msconfig and used the advanced options under the "boot" tab to start up using only 1 processor.

After that, the problem gradually got better and better until it went away completely.

Really, that sounds pretty weird and might be completely coincidentally tbh. Or do you have any explanation for what the link between those 2 issues (hard drive stuttering and using a single core only for the windows start) could be. I am always curious to learn sth new.

    @OP
Definitely sounds like a HD problem and +1 for Totalheadaches suggestions. Before any possible defragmentation, make sure there are no errors on the HD/filesystem.

It may be completely coincidental - though I'm throwing the suggestion out there anyway. If the OP confirms it solves his problem, then we may be on to something.

I downloaded that HD Tune Pro and I'm gonna run the disk scan. It's looking like it's gonna take 7 or 8 hours, so I'll post back after that.

As for the rest, I doubt starting with a single processor would help. I've done nothing different and it's not caused any problems for the year or so I've owned the system, so it makes no sense to change that variable now. I'll leave it at what it was for now.

Thanks for all the posts guys, I'll keep up updated.

Oh, yeah, I also ran that Game Booster. That seems to help a bit, but I'd prefer not to have to disable have the stuff in my system every time I run a game. It'll do for the meantime though.

Yeah, pretty much. It did a single line on the graph thing in 12 minutes. So it's gonna take awhile, I dunno. I'll set it to run when I'm sleeping.
