Unless you plan on going republic, ally only with clans sharing the same allegiance as yours, and even then, not all of them except the dominant ones who will join you after realm divide when all the opposite allegiance clans declare war on you. You can swallow up small same allegiance clans standing in the way of your expansion before realm divide, but don't overdo it especially if they are militarily strong, not because you can't defeat them, but to let them help you expand your influence through their own conquests. Which of course adds to your victory count of loyal cities.

You can always cancel some of your alliances pre-RD. This way you won't have to make any 'ally attacks ally/ally attacked' decisions. You can make up the subsequent 'Betrayed Alliances' daimyo honour penalty (which is only -2 or -3 IIRC) easily enough with technologies and establishing vassals.

and it already turned against me. bye bye nice 6 honor. one of weak vassels got attacked, and when i rmoved that clan from existence, andother one attack a newly formed one. CA should make vassels be seen as part of you by the ai. im not going to attack the strongest clan in the game's vassel as a minor 3 province clan while im allied with him.

Vassals still class as a seperate clan (restricted somewhat as they are by their parent clan); you offer them "protection in return for regular tribute and military access to their lands". Having said that, they do count towards your province total. I can understand the CAI viewing a weak vassal as an easy province capture, it's the honour penalty you get for siding with them thats frustrating.

I'm in favour of removing the -1 honour hit for entering a war against your ally in defense of your vassal. You are, after all, defending a clan under your protection, which to me seems far more honourable than leaving them to their fate against a powerful aggresor.

yeah, that might be better. thogh vassels aint necercerly weak. i have a vassel of mine as the second strongest clan in the game as he steamrolled the rest of honshu for me. just some matsumae left in the north. were now 3 provinces short of winning but the jozai stack is harrasing his backlands. so it kinda depends on if my reinforcing stack can defend the castel against him.

quite fun game, though it sucks taht i had to devote 3 stacks to the west fighting friendly clans.
