Default Some questions to the Community

I have some questions for you all.

    1. On Average how many Roman Pre-Marian Legions do you build?

    2. How many settlements are on the map? Is it 130 or 131?

    3. Does anyone keep a standing Navy?

These questions are for Pre marian era not Post Marius Era.

    Thank you

    1) It depends. I usually have one legion in the early stages of the game while I'm dealing with Hannibal and the rebellion in Italy. After I've secured Italy and Sicily, I can usually support two, maybe three legions. That's when I expand into Africa. I have max 3-4 pre-Marian legions.

    2) Don't know.

    3) Yes, I have a standing navy. I mainly use it to hunt down pirates, and to sink enemy ships.

I have about six or eight legions right now (I have Africa, Transalpine Gaul, and Hispania save three Gallaeci cities), one allied for every citizen legion. The number will vary depending on how many I need.
I have a pretty strong navy. I do a lot of ferrying and enemies always go for the ports.

It really depends on how many regions I control. Generally I would say I have at least two per "region"...I'd hate to have no legions in Italy if any faction ever decides to do something crazy like invade the Italian mainland.

    No idea.

I keep a small navy around the peninsula to deal with pirates and then at least one large navy west and one large navy east of Italy.

    1. I now possess italian peninsula, massallia, carthago nova, emporiae and saguntum and have about 3 polybian roman stacks (one always stationed in italy) and around 5 allied stacks with whom I do the most killing.

    2. 130 should be pretty accurate

    3. yes, when im at war with a nation.. my navy is at their ports

Best define to be sure - and ask others to edit posts if different (because I know we all are) - I'm assuming you mean 'Legion = full stack'? In which case:

1 - pre-Marian - 2 x Polybian; 5 x Allied + a few extra troops built to weather the period. Note, the next time I do start a Roma 1-turn campaign (after my test one is done - eventually), I'm thinking to advance the date of the reforms and use the Early Legions more - so there will be quite a change.

2 - there a lot more than 130 settlements on the map, a quick count suggests 190 or so. 130 is about the number shown on the map that equal the extent of the empire at the historical end of the period of the simulation (which would appear to be the end of the first century AD).

3 - Yes, absolutely. At the point of your pre-Marian Legion assessment 3-4 squadrons (each TBBTBB) and 3-4 ferries (single Triremes)

1- About 3 Stacks as I was concentrating on getting the reforms fast and I was mostly just defending against Carthage and securing my northern borders.

    2- I never took notice.
3- 1 fleet for pirates and intercepting enemy ships and one for ferrying

    1) I think it's usually about 6 stacks in 1-turn, once Italy is cleared of Carthaginians and Roman Rebels. (After the reforms, it's all praetorian + HA spam until I hit twenty stacks... just kidding.)
    2) ???
    3) I like to have at least four fleets: one guarding Corsica/Sardinia, one guarding Sicily, one shuttling troops between Tarentum & Illyria/Greece, and another shuttling troops to and from Rome (to wherever). More as needed, depending on where I expand (e.g., usually the Aegean gets a few, the Atlantic coast of Spain/France may get one).

    (1) At 555 AUC, I have two Polybian and four Allied legions. I hold the Italian peninsula with 3 out of 4 Cisalpine settlements, just finished annexing Surakosai and Massilia as a retaliation to those back stabbing Greeks. I am fighting for my dear life to keep hold of Emporiae against Carthagenian foes.

    (2) I thought 130 was the target for the large campaign.

    (3) As part of my strategy I definitively want to rule the Mediterranean. I have 3 to 4 navies at a time, 3 of them in constant patrolling while one retraining after losses. Typically, either TTBB or dual Qs as a unit.

Edit: This is Rome 1-turn, to be specific. Having played 0-turns for a while now, reverting to 1-turn was actually a quite nice experience. Less hectic for us old souls around here

    1) 8 - 10 or more legions but filled with mercenaries and locla troops!

    2) I do not know, but why do you ask? Do you want to conquer all the world, I did it only once in Vanilla RTW, many years ago, it was really funny!

    3) I have as many ships I can maintain! The navy is useful!

Still waiting to have my computer set up, but from my last campaign:

    1. Do you mean how many do I recruit or the average strength of forces before 100BC? From the start to the reforms (whenever they are triggered) is a rather long time but as a rough average
    - At least 3 complete legions (One stack, half Roman and half Allied) in Spain and 1 to 2 in Sicily and Illyria until the invasion of North Africa at which point the Spanish Legions are reinforced for the assault there
    - At least 10 Legions in existence for the various wars in Macedonia to Pergamon

    2. I though something around 150 plus but must admit I've never counted

    3. Tend to build several fleets, each headed by a flagship, with some for fighting and some for transport. They are used for campaign support, pirate irradicating and blockading enemy trade

    1. Like how many

    (1 General/FM, 8 cohorts, 4 triarii, 2 velites/archers, 2 cav.)

legion stacks do I have campaigning or guarding a border by the time I decide to hit the Marian Reforms? If so, I'd say 4-6.

    2. Hmm, I'm not totally sure....130...right?...I think? Are you testing us or something? Haha, this question bugs me.... Maybe I am over thinking it like some job application survey hahahaha.

    3. Yes. I have keep a heavy duty one (one quinquereme, and a bunch of triremes) in the Western Med. to fend off Carthies and pirates, and a smaller one (some triremes, and biremes) to fed off pirates and Greeks in the Adriatic/Ionia area.

    1) Been going thin on Legions atm, to build up my cities, though it is a problem now ( I detect Chris10 script influence here , 4 Elite Full Strength Cimbri Armies just invaded me). Its 564 A.U.C., I own all of Italy, Corsica, Sardina, Pollentia, Massalia, all of Sicily, both cities in Illyria (Sanguntum and Salonae I think), Drrydachium (sp?), Appollonia, and the one closest to Pella. Had 3 Legions in Illryia, 1 near Massalia, 1 in Sicily, 1 in northern Italy...also had a half "Legion" of Samnites and Lucani Light Infantry, with Cretan Archer and Campanian Cavalry support. Each Legion had a compliment of reinforcements as well (following as their baggage train), of each troop type...Typical legion is 1 General, 8 Polybian Cohorts, 4 Triraii (sp?), 3 Cretan Archers, and 4 Latin Medium Cavalry. One legion in Illyria was destroyed, so the Sicilian Legion has shipped over. All the Cimbri Armies headed to Illyria, I defeated one, the rest backed off, but I'm sure their not gone... As an aside, a plague just struck Akragas, convenient since I was close to building the last palace, but is ok, since I'm not quite ready for reforms....

    2) Haven't ever counted them...

    3) Yes, keep a moderate standing navy. I push out alot of ships at some point, generally blockading Carthage and Greek ports and patrolling for seaborne invasions. It seems to me they occur more often ( when playing as the Gallaeci, Rome shipped over 4 full Legions to retake Emporaie over several turns, much to my chagrin) All told, prolly 10-11 tririmes, 3-4 Quinquirimes, and a couple of Birimes as shuttle craft between Italy and Sicily/Macedon/Illryria etc...

    1) As many as I need. But then again, I don't form any sort of standard army with x amount of units or w/e. I recruit some dependable line infantry, bring along a general and leave the rest to local levies, mercenaries...whether they are inferior or superior. This is the way to get the most bang for your buck...if you're looking for any sort of challenge, lol. Just try fighting the entire Greek campaign with Greek missile cavalry as your shock troops, win.

    2) Derp

    3) There isn't any need for a standing navy in this game, nevermind a floating one.
