    Default Upgrade Parts list

Hello...again.... (I am sure this is definitely NOT the last time the Basement will have to deal with me...whether thats good, or bad, I leave up to those who will reply)...

As a potential birthday present for my Dad, I am considering getting a few new parts to update his nearly 5 year-old desktop, and make it possible for him to play newer games with relative ease. Keeping in mind his birthday is early mid May, I may just decide to do it as a late gift...or just as something nice and awesome.

As it stands I am looking at purchasing these components from NCIX.com (my PC arrived 2 days after they sent the shipping e-mail notice and it is Canadian based...Nationalism!) and I am basing my choice of Mobo and PSU from what Crazyeyes suggested back in August.

    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59615 - psu - $64.99 normal
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59829&promoid=1101 - $69.99 normal pricing
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58339 - $131.76 normal pricing
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=60640 - $41.99
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58225 - $173.28 normal price

I know these parts are already mildly outdated, but I don't need to get the absolute top-of-the-line components as my dad isn't obsessed with graphics, but basically all I need out of this is bang for buck.

I can skip getting the 6850 as he does have a 5670 (which is very underpowered...) or can get a 7750 for a mere $119. http://ncix.com/products/?sku=68500&...cture=Gigabyte

Main thing is, I won't be ordering for some time though - I do need to get me a more regular job (catering every other weekend doesn't really cut it...) and save up some first.

As it stands, with the 6850, it looks to cost slightly over $500 before taxes. (I won't be able to get this in time for the current instant discounts or Mail In's)
Without 6850, it will be around $320-$340.
With the 7750 it will run around $430.

Basically I just need input as to whether or not this is a 'good' parts list.
I want to be able to upgrade my dad's computer, but I would put a definite cap of $550 on it.

Thanks for any input and advice in advance...And thanks for putting up with my rambling nonsense...again

if your running H61 and I3 2100 you need to swap down to 1333MHz ram, unless you know what proper timings to use, its more likely youll run into problems

6850 is the better buy hands down 7750 = 6750 / 6770 its fairly weak 7750 is usually on par with the 6850 but in most situations the 6850 tends to be cheaper then a 7770 and is fairly close performance wise,

but yea 6850 is the better gpu right now 7700 series just really isnt that special

    Ok, thanks man!

For the most part though (apart from the ram ...I will make sure to get the 1333 MHz if/when I eventually get the stuff), the list is alright?
Is there a better bang for buck processor available right now?

The 7750 is more powerful than the 5670 at any rate though, right?

yea 7750 is more powerful but not by much, still better tho, in all honesty your better off holding out for a 6850 or 7770

essentially an overclocked 5670 will reach 6670 performance or slightly better still gives you 30% more but for the cost 6850 offers double the performance a 5670 does for a very small price increase compared to 7750
    I dont know your exact location but here in the USA a 7750 = $110 6850 = $140 $30 difference for 30% more performance over a 7750
heres the cheapest cards i could find of each
    7750: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161403
    6850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131374

if shipping is factored in its $116 vs $140 $24 difference NCIX is different and if your in canada this probably isnt helpful but it does mean you should look around and see what other sites and stores in your area are offering for the price.

Yeah, when I've looked at Newegg in comparison to some stuff on NCIX, there is definitely a disparity in pricing - ie, Newegg is somewhat cheaper.
I will be taking a closer look over the coming week or three, I still need to get some more money before I can finalize anything.

I'm looking at NCIX primarily as that is where I did order my computer back in August (thanks again for the help that time man!) and I have a modicum of experience dealing with them, none with Newegg.

I'll do some more poking around. Perhaps Newegg will have cheaper prices across the board (I can hope...).

Edit: Definitely a nice price difference on Newegg.ca compared to NCIX.com. Average 6850 price there is $150 compared to around $160-170.
    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814121419 - 6850
    i3 2100 is also slightly cheaper - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...tel+i3&x=0&y=0
There are cheaper H61 boards there too - some Asrock, Biostar and MSI varieties for ~$55.
Ram 1333MHz for $38 ...I'll take that any day, assuming it's not...faulty or anything http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231424
PSU is slightly more expensive for the same model. But, it's certainly cheaper across the board. Thanks for the help so far again man!

    Solid.

Of course, the 6850's price might drop a bit between now and when/if I order. As I said, it will be some time (I will be saving for University and this simultaneously afterall, so it will take a while...that and I do suck at managing money ) before I order. Instead of a Birthday present, it might end up being a "Oh, hey, here's two year old computer components for Christmas!" style of gift.
It's easier on me though to have things pre-planned though.

Shipping costs didn't look absolutely terrible, however when included I think that they will even up the price - greatest thing though is that Newegg had a much better variety and selection of parts particularly in the
pricing (well, it seemed that way).

Edit: Yeeeeeah. Newegg's shipping cost for a particular 6850 is $11.19. I calculated shipping cost on NCIX for the entire above list and it was only $12.10.
