    Default Psychedelic+Prog music

    Hi all!

I am a great fan of late sixties psychedelia bands (early Pink Floyd, Felt, Haymarket square,Gandalf, United States of America, 13th floor elevators)

Also I could die for the Canterbury school of progressive music (Egg, Khan, Steve Hillage)
Krautrock (german or cosmic rock) is great too, especially Indigo, Zarathustra, Novalis, Holderlin, Agamemmnon, etc.

The greedy pop industry itself taught me to find real values, because the low-quality issues of classic rock bands were avaliable on budget price, while contemporary top-dogs were unpayable. I could only afford Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, not a new metal or disco cassette
I was always a fan of melodic music so there was no chance for me to be a rap or disco lover, in addition to that, we had some old lps and cassettes..
For years I almost forgot my obession. I only listened to Jarr, Vangelis, classical music.
Yet one of my friends borrowed my harddisk, and downloaded early rock. I listened to some of these things, and rock has awaken in me!
It is luck, that some companies reissue oldies, mostly long forgotten, one-lp bands. They sometime use an lp to get the record as master tapes are often lost!
So, if you have an interest in these bands, come and let us discuss.

I'll have to be honest and admit that i havent heard of most of the bands you've listed, but i do have an interest in early prog-rock (though i prefer the more modern variety)
Bands i listen to from that era would be Pink Floyd (of course) and King Crimson (just started listening to them)
If you could recommend some decent early prog bands that i could check out, that would be appreciated. I prefer the "darker" stuff, rather than the hippy stuff.

I'm not massively into the early stuff, although I do like some of the stuff by Jefferson Airplane. I'm trying to find songs by some more modern psychadelia bands, so far not too much luck with that either.

These days, Psychadelic music is usually electronic. I enjoy a lot of electronic stuff, so i'm not so bothered by that, but some people are "purists" and avoid it, which is fair enough.

What the world of music desperatly needs is a new instrument, or method of making music. Everything is so stale at the moment, and music is constantly being rehashed. The few bands that are labelled "Progressive" arent really that progressive when compared to the real prog bands from the 60's and 70's.
Look what happened when electric guitar effects started coming out, or when the first synths were produced, or the first samplers.
Real prog bands need tools to play with, and it seems that we've run out (for the time being anyway)

We need some more Smashing Pumpkins. By that I mean we need some more bands prepared to take risks and be willing to push the boundries- Adore for example- made massive use of electronic production techniques- things that I believe bands will begin to use soon- infact Muse and Audioslave are already trying to incorporate elements of electronica... myself I hope that new methods of songwriting begin to take root and really create something original.

    Psycahdelic music?

    Infected mushroom, dancing with kadafi.

I'm not usually one for dance music but this goes from 80's guitar to psychadellic trance to classical to arabian themed classical. Truly amazing stuff.

I like electronic music if played with skill and deepness as it is case with Steve Hillage albums. (or Vangelis)
I would not say that we have no experimental stuff, but real prog are rare, that's right. We have high tech synthethyzers, (those could emulate Hammond organ sound!) electronic sitar (I love indian and eastern music instruments) sticks, and some many technical novelty. Most of these existed back in the seventies, but there are some new.
Of course, making a new sounding could be rare after the seventies when people tried out almost everything, electronic music, artificial noises, etc.
But for me not novelty is the important thing. A music can be new and original without any real new idea, by its unique form and artist's creativity. Just play what you feel, and feel hard. And think deep too.
That is prog for me: the music of mind, music for educated but not snobbish people.
You know what is the problem? Today's mass culture try to trample on everything spiritual, which could be not a simple product on the market. In smaller countries like mine, there are no prog radio stations, recording labels publish not any of this stuff (Solaris, Hungary's only prog band had just one Lp, thereafter the members only could issue lps as a pop band, playing pop music) , people have no idea what prog or pscyhedelia are!
By the way, next week I will buy my first Fender Stratocaster copy

Stalin's ghost: psychedelic music has the highest diversity from all forms of music. I am sure you may find interesting things. There are psychedelic hardrock bands, pop, west-coast rock, early psych metal, electronic,
and late beat-style bands with hammond organ, I could not list everything.
I just sind into this deepness of divine diversity

The Beatles were pretty trippy 1967 onwards. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Only A Northern Song, etc.

Some people say Beatles started psychedelic music with Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
However the phrase was invented by Holy Medal Rounders, and used by 13th floor elevators too. The style was floating around since some time. The Pink Floyd being independent from Beatles was already making psychedelic music. The Beatles though popularized it. Incredible change from a popular good boys band into a somewhat arkward, druggy-dreamy style, but Lucy is great though
