Malic was always an odd choice for a trill host. His sarcastic sense of humour and his contentment in taking things one step at a time not bringing him to the top of his classes. But trill hosts are searched for to provide something new for the symbiont and academic achievement doesn't always bring the applicant success. There is no denying that Malic is a smart man, but he falls into that odd category of being slightly smarter than most people around him, yet not smart enough to do anything particular with it. But he is a man who is aware of his flaws, and this inner sense of balance, combined with his happy go lucky attitude gave him that little something that is searched for in hosts - the ability to live your own life, not just the trills. The trill on the other hand is relatively young, Malic being only its second host. The first was a overly serious doctor named Salis. She had died after only seven years of joining in a plague of praxus five.
