The Science Lab and Astro-science Office

The first port of call to explain anything strange. With some of the brighest minds in Starfleet, the Science and Astro-Science department is responsible for bringing bearing on any natural or technical phenomena affecting the ship and its mission. They are also responsible for managing the mapping of the areas explored.

Lieutenant Commander Sophia-Marie von Stock, Chief Science Officer and Second Officer

Sophia enters the Science Lab and begins gaining familiarity with the systems. Since her interests lie with astrophysics and temporal mechanics, she begins monitoring the wormhole and takes detailed notes of sensor readings.

[Tazgrent]

Grissom strolls into the science lab, careful not to accidentally nudge some instrument off proper readings.

"Dr. von Stock, I presume? I'm Lt. Commander Grissom, the XO. Just touring the ship, checking if everyone is settled in alright."

[Diamat]

Taken by surprise, Sophia rises, shakes the commander's hand, and responds hastily:

"Yes Sir, I am quite alright...just studying sensor readings of the approaching wormhole. I am looking forward to working with you, Sir."

Because Sophia considers appearance to be important, she stares the commander in the eyes with seeming confidence, awaiting a response.

[Tazgrent]

Grissom nods in agreement.

"That's good. I've always been interested in astronomy, so I look forward to seeing what discoveries we make on our voyage. If you aren't needing anything else, I'd like to continue my tour."

[Diamat]

Sophia was a little bit annoyed by the commander's usage of the word "astronomy." She was an astrophysicist, not an astronomer. But instead of correcting him, she just said:

"No Sir. It was nice having made your acquaintance."

[Tazgrent]

"Likewise."
With a short nod, Grissom steps out of the science lab and continues his tour.

[The Stig]

Tharin enters the Science Lab and walks over to von Stock.

"Ensign Tharin Thas, reporting for duty sir."

The Chief intelligence officer, S'jenes Kalelothran, arrived at the Science lab, he noticed the Lieutenant Commander and saluted her accordingly,
"Lieutenant Commander Von Stock."
he nodded,
"I am Lieutenant Kalelothran, Third officer and Chief of Intelligence."

[Diamat]

Tharin enters the Science Lab and walks over to von Stock.

"Ensign Tharin Thas, reporting for duty sir."

Sophia looking surprised at the Andorian's visage:

"Reporting for duty? I don't remember an Andorian on the list of my staff. This is the Science Department. Are you sure you are in the right place?"

The Chief intelligence officer, S'jenes Kalelothran, arrived at the Science lab, he noticed the Lieutenant Commander and saluted her accordingly,

he nodded,
"I am Lieutenant Kalelothran, Third officer and Chief of Intelligence."

Sophia looked at the Vulcan politely. She always got along well with Vulcans, since her character resembled that of a Vulcan.

"Pleased to meet you, Lt. Kale.... Well, suffice it to say, I will have to practice pronunciation of your name. I'm looking forward to our fruitful cooperation."

[Dark Storm]

"Our co-operation would certainly be beneficial to whatever mission we have been assigned."
he looked around the Science lab noticing the various readings being taken,
"Is there anything you have found which is of use Lieutenant Von Stock? Any anomalies within your data?"
he asked directly,
"Is there, indeed, anything you would like to know, I have been studying the Gamma Quadrant for some time now in preparation and am quite well versed on it."

[The Stig]

"I was a last minute addition to the crew. I've only recently been assigned to the Science Department."

[Diamat]

"I see. Well, I will have to go over your service record to allow for efficient functioning of your abilities. Can you give me a quick overview of your previous experience and fields of expertise, Ensign?"

[The Stig]

"I have degrees in Exobiology and Exoarcheaology. For the past several years I have served onboard the USS Capetown, conducting a biological and astronomical survey of the Unus system. I also recieved basic martial training as a youth."

[Diamat]

"Our co-operation would certainly be beneficial to whatever mission we have been assigned."
he looked around the Science lab noticing the various readings being taken,
"Is there anything you have found which is of use Lieutenant Von Stock? Any anomalies within your data?"
he asked directly,
"Is there, indeed, anything you would like to know, I have been studying the Gamma Quadrant for some time now in preparation and am quite well versed on it."

"I appreciate your concern, Lieutenant, but I doubt you could be of any assistance regarding this matter. It involves wormhole physics and other theoretical astrophysics."

Sophia realized that she might have sounded somewhat too harsh. So she added:

"Actually, there is one question I do have. Given your position of Chief of Intelligence, you must surely be aware of the sensor network the Federation has placed around the wormhole, in order to prevent any cloaked ship from passing through undetected. In your professional opinion, how reliable is this system?"

"Martial arts. No surprise given your heritage. You won't be needing that around here."

She pointed to his station.

"Although I have no particular assignment for you at the moment, you could run a systems diagnostics on that console over there, and familiarize yourself with the interface."

[The Stig]

He tipped his head slightly, almost like a bow, and went to his station.

In a stern voice, Sophia exclaimed as the Andorian turned his back:

"For future reference, call me Ma'am, not Sir."

[Dark Storm]

S'jenes nodded,
"I know of this system."
he paused, before continuing, to consider his answer,
"The system could detect ten cloaked ships, it could detect one hundred cloaked ships. However it may not detect a thousand cloaked ships through. Certainly we would know of the hundred and ten found, yet we'd never know about the thousand other ships that had passed as, obviously, they are cloaked. Therefore the system is unreliable, as we can never know the extent of its effectiveness one way or the other to a 100% guarantee."

[Diamat]

S'jenes nodded,
"I know of this system."
he paused, before continuing, to consider his answer,
"The system could detect ten cloaked ships, it could detect one hundred cloaked ships. However it may not detect a thousand cloaked ships through. Certainly we would know of the hundred and ten found, yet we'd never know about the thousand other ships that had passed as, obviously, they are cloaked. Therefore the system is unreliable, as we can never know the extent of its effectiveness one way or the other to a 100% guarantee."

Sophia pointed to her monitor:

"Indeed. A single ship should not be able to penetrate the Tachyon detection grid. Even if it tried to remodulate its shield frequency, it could not do this in time, since the tachyons are set on an alternating frequency."

Short Pause.

"Thank you, Lieutenant. You have been of great assistance."

Below the monitor there was another reading. However, Sophia knew that the Vulcan would not be able to understand its meaning, and so she did not bother trying to explain it...particularly because she did not want to start a needless commotion on her first day back on duty. She resolved that if she kept studying the readings, she would get to the bottom of things.
