Default Re Publica Defendenda - An RTR AAR

The year is 280 BC in the year of the Consulship of the Senior Consul Publius Valerius Laevinus and the Junior Consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus. The Senate has assigned Marcellus to wipe out the Eturian City State of Arminum. Valerius Laevinus is to wipe out the Samnite COnfederation.

Laevinus promptly stormed through the country side and laid siege to
Asculum, Capital City of the Samnites. The Smanite Chief, Aethon, sent for reinforcements from the Greek Italians, who sent 2 forces up to Samnium. Laevinus was attacked by Brundisium's force and instead of giving battle against more then 2:1 odds, he fleed.

Laevinus promptly ordered a Seocnd Legion to be recruited in Capua. He waited 6 months for its assembly before stirking out against Asculum.

Meanwhile, Marcellus marched up and besieged the Umbrian King, Amphimachos. He promplty constructed two battering rams and attacked the city.

Marcellus set up his troops so that a bulk would go on the left while his toiugher troops took the gates. The battle went somewhat as palnned. The tough Princeps and Hastati smashed through the gates and cut down many Umbrians.

After the main force was cut down, along with Amphimachos who bravely died fighting, Marcellus sent a unit of Hastati to secure the town's interior.

He was caught unaware that a unit fo Italian Spearmen was occupying the Cnetral Region however. The Centurion ordered a charge at the Umbrians, leading to a quick massacre of his unit.

Marcellus hastily ordered ad advance of hsi froces to relieve the hastati. With the dmeolishing of the last of the Umbrians, the dead were counted.

Meanwhile, Laeivnus was attacked ina sally by Aethon and his Greek reinforcements. Despite this being his first battle, Laevinus crushed them.

Meanwhile the delayed army of Croton approached Asculum. Valerius and his new contubernalis, Gaius Valerius LAevinus, marched out to attack them.

In the heat of the battle Gaius Valerius was thrown off his horse and died instantly. Publius Valerius took this poorly. At the end of his Consulship, he announced that he was retiring from public duty to his new Villas on the coast of Samnium.

At this time, one of his Daughters became married to a young man of the most illustrious birth, Quintus Claudius Lepidus. Laevinus only permitted Lepidus among a few others acess to him. He had known Lepidus' father, another Quintus Lepidus before he died in the Plague that had been sweeping Roma.

Lepidus colelcted a legion form Capua and marched on a Picentine named Attius Labienus. This man had been going about proclaiming himself the King of Latium, Picenum, and Campania. Labienus had attracted a small force around himself and had designs on Roma.

Lepidus promptly offered battle and massacred Labienus' forces.

Meanwhile, Laevinus' second daughter, Lucilla, became engaged to a Senator who was runnign for COnsul in 278.

Gallus was a good man in Laevinus' eyes. He was more of a vir militaris then anything but also had decent Patrician lineage. He was a Superior Commander and a flat out Natural Leader.

Meanwhile, Quintus Fabius raised a legion and was ordered to attack Paestum. Its gates were open as the inhabitants were eager to join Rome.

Quintus Lepidus took his now battle hardened legions and laid siege to Arretium, the last Free Eturian city. Its King, Dymnos, put up a greta fight but he and his men perished. 100 of the men surrendered at the end without a fight, accepting the inevitable.

Gallus took his legion and moved it against Brundisium. He began the siege in earnest. The city was lgihtly defended and the inhabitants knew they stood no chance.

    To be Continued....

    The World Situation:

To the east Parhtia has rpaidly epxanded, taking contorl of the Western Indus bank and most of Iran. They have entered into war with Bactria and have prepared an army to overwhelm them.

In Greece, The Spartans have taken the Peloponesus and forced Maceodnia to sign a humiliating peace giving up Bylazora. They have asserted themselves as the Fourth Most Pwoerful nation.

The Gallic Horde has turned back form Maceodnia and now has seized Auqilea. It may descend on Italia. That cannot be allowed as it was little more then 115 years ago that Brennus sacked Roma.

    Faction Leader List:

Quintus (280- ?) - Oversaw the First expansion outside Pcienum and Campania. Brought Roma into a period of great prosperity.
