Difference in Armour Piercing Shells?

As the subject says, what's the difference between the two types of armour piercing shells? The encyclopedia wasn't of much help to me. Thanks.

The first one goes zoom and sparkles like a twighlight vampire, the second one does more kaboom.

Well, i really saw a difference against wood and copper ships (conquered all Japan before fighting above copper ships every time.) for the two. The upgraded version literally obliterated crews, while the first one stumbled them.

Anyway, both cause fire at random (must be the vampire-thing) and with enough firepower ruin ships before they fire explosive shells at you.
