    Default WAT JUST HAPPENED!?!?!?

Ok so i was the Tosa and had conquered south japan(the main island) and the island i started on i had a big navy of all iron warships an army of all the best soldiers and then i conquered a random island which made me legendary which forced me to chose right? and i chose republic and it said hostility would grow but when i pressed that i instantly went to war with everyone all my cities were bombarded while rebels sieged all the castles and burned the land and like three turns into this mess they sunk my navy with 30+ ships from six navies and demolished my army...i fought off the huge onslaught in Shogun 2 and RotS with ease but this was ridiculous so my question is...wat the hell happened o and if i restart how would i deal with it next time cause i really dnt want to become the lackey of the emperor or shogun

I believe you're referring to Kyushu as the southernmost island you conquered, which has two copper resource provinces that reduce naval recruitment costs. Upgrade to military ports in those provinces and churn out ironclad class ships. Before triggering "realm divide", you should develop all resources that add to your income to the max and upgrade at least to commercial farms in all provinces to get enough money to maintain strong armies and navies. You should also upgrade all ports especially to military ports in strategic locations to counter enemy fleets. You don't need too many army stacks as long as you have strong fleets patrolling the bottleneck waterways near kyushu and shikoku. It's hard work maintaining naval superiority, but you can easily replace your losses if you have a strong developed economy.

If you're going republic - be prepared to lose cities. If you're Tosa, be willing to give up all of your cities except for your initial island and a beach head on to the mainland. The idea is to give yourself a much smaller area to defend from while you tackle these new enemies.

For this there are words, but none that abide by the ToS.

I haven't tried it yet but from what I've heard it's like realm divide in shogun 2 but you have less provinces so it's harsher.

    Would this work?

    1) sell indefinite military access to anyone I can
    2) have my treasury built up
    3) have my frontline stacks in position for an immediate offensive as soon as I hit legendary fame. The same turn as I go republic.
    4) Have one or more stacks ready to be dropped somewhere via naval invasion far from my frontline, this group(s) will loot enemy provinces and move on to the next province, immediately if possible. Let the rebels have it I'll take it back later.
    5) Have a couple extra units in each province so they won't rebel right away. Unless the unrest hits all at once?
    6) Have my navy attack any navies they can defeat right after I go republic. The same turn.

    What do you think?

Yes, that would work. Have about 3 ~ 5 levies per city to help with both defense (you will get a lot of invasion landings once you go republic) and happiness. If you plan your buildings right (have at least fortress built for repression and second tier propaganda building for 1 happiness and 1 repression [don't upgrade beyond second tier because this is the highest level where allegiance spread is not specific so it'll work with republic allegiance]), you won't see any rebellion at all. Remember, the unrest only comes from allegiance change, which takes time to build up. If you set your propaganda network to make the conversion fast as possible, then the unrest from going republic shouldn't reach higher than say, 4 or so, then it'll go back down again as your towns become 100% republic.

Economy wise, make sure you can pay for your army/navy upkeep from taxes alone as you will lose just about all trades.

Also don't sell indefinite military access, because odds are even before RD, AI will often break alliances/deals with you so you have to remake the deals, and you want to be able to offer even 1 turn of military access. I suppose you could always break the indefinite MA then sell it again... but that might cause diplomatic penalty.

You only need 3 ~ 4 stacks of land armies to survive and expand slowly. Fool proof stacks are about 6 - 8 artillery, 8 ~ 12 line infantry and a general. That'll basically get you almost casualty free victories, but if that feels cheap, just make sure you get more stacks because on VH/Legendary you will see stacks of armies coming at you (granted most are levies and hence easy kill).

One aspect about going republic that makes it easier than RD from Shogun 2 is that the imperials and shogunates will also be fighting each other (although they seem to hate you a lot more). The harder aspect is of course endless waves of ships bombarding your economy.

No you can hold onto all your cities. If anything, if you start to lose a lot of provinces you will be setback to the point where you won't be able to make timely comeback.

Retreating off the main island won't reduce the intensity of the attacks at all is what I mean. Meanwhile, your economy will take a good hit from losing all those cities. There is no upside to such large scale retreat in this game.
