The best way to survive the chaos invasion if your playing as one of the less powerful factions, is to have a few strong armys hidden, either in forests, or in ships off shore. let the chaos invasion pass through your lands, they will capture some of your most important cities, but once they capture them the first time, they usually wont attack again. So once they have passed through, retake your cities with your hidden armies, and then try to hold out for as long as you can.
Another tactic, but this only works if your a very good general, is to have a full army of just cavalry, knights, pistoliers etc. Attack chaos armies coming towards your towns, do night battles to make sure you only fight one army at a time. The objective is not to wipe out the army, but to try and kill as many of their weaker units and general units. E.g attack their artillery, wizards, mauraders and generals bodyguard. you dont have to sacrifice your army to do this. Once your men are exhaused, out of ammo, and theres no easy targets left, simply withdraw from the battle, DONT QUIT THE BATTLE,select each unit and select withdraw, which will make them run from the battle. Because the chaos armys are scripted they will (usually) ignore your cav army and continue onto the city they are trying to capture. So this way you can keep harassing the enemy armys, wearing them down.
Another important tactic, somethign that you should try to do for the whole campaign is to help your allies. The best thing to do is to make a full army of Cav, with a 10 star general, and send him to fight battles in your allies lands. If your allies are being besieged by the beast men, attack the army from behind and help your ally win the battle. The stronger the empire is by the time the storm of chaos starts, the better chance you will have to win
what faction are you playing as? If its your first time playing CoW then maybe try playig as some of the easier factions until you get used to the game and the tactics
I hope that was helpful
Thanks for this answer!!! I'm playing with the dwarfs. The only bad thing that I see on that faction, is that don't have cavalry
I am going to try to play as the Dwarves for my first run through of 1.5 campaign. I am on turn 12 so far and haven't been attacked one. Considering as Stirland in 1.5 I had defeated and lost battles to three and a half stacks of Vampire Counts troops at around the same point in the campaign, so I am going to start it again to see if a script didn't fire or something.
(I am basing this peculiarity off of Kurgis' faction guide, where he lists how many sieges you will have to fight as the Dwarves, but maybe they do only pick up once Vampire Counts has knocked Ostermark, Talabecland and Stirland into the stone age, and the Orcs and gobbos have united.)

Nooooooooo!!!!, My saved game is corrupted and I can't load my game...I've lost all my dwarves campaign...I'm started a new campaign as Talablecand (I think this is the correct way to write) and I saved my campaign frecuently to avoid that failure...
Oh dear, i hate it when that happens! Well at least you can try and use some of the tips i gave you now
If your playing as Talablecand make sure to capture Mordheim when the Grand Teologist launchs a crusade against it! After thats taken make sure you use the crusade option as often as you can! Dont let other faction call crusades against useless targets.
A Couple things you might try.
1. Attack isolated chaos armies as they come into your field of vision
2. Use a general with "night fighter" if they are grouped
3. Bring a helstorm rocket battery or two, they can launch all their ammo quickly, before the melee clash, and devaste even 2-3hp troops that are massed.
4. Use archers in siege warfare, but on the open field, cavalry is a much better choice, en masse around a flank or rear attack, enemy engines and range priority first (pistoliers own at this, charge them in to melee vs archers).
5. Halberdmen, spread them out, guard mode, spearwall. They will hold the center better than they really should be able to.
6. Make sure you are using your generals to fight, even stack them all up in the same army. They will refill their own units so you can fight battle after battle without going to town to recharge.
7. Use your armor penetration troops against trolls, ogres, minotaurs. Or use a fodder unit to bog them down while you fight the battle, then come back and finish them with knights toward the end of the battle.
8. Use a couple infantry units with your mass cavalry flank attack. Run the infantry , double clicking past the enemy unit so they will get in very deep. A must when your cavalry is facing superior troops.
