Default H.M.S. Dauntless sets sail for the Falklands

Her Majesty's Ship Dauntless is due to set sail from Portsmouth today for a six-month deployment in the South Atlantic whilst tension between Buenos Aires and London increases. A few days ago services in both countries were held to mark the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War. A conflict which resulted in the loss of 258 Britons and 649 Argentines dead.
The ship is one of the most advanced in the Royal Navy. As a Type 45 Destroyer, it is easily capable of wiping Argentine planes out of the sky. It is a clear warning to Mrs. Kirchner's Government that Great Britain is prepared to defend her interests and will not tolerate foreign aggression.

    H.M.S. Dauntless

Do you believe it possible for a conflict between the two nations to spark? If so, which country would stand triumphant?

This is good; although the whole Falklands thing is beaten up by the Kirchner government to simply distract people from her government's hand in messing things up economically. So war wont come of it.

This. Argentina will continue to talk big, but nothing will come out of it. Plus Britain can have any sort of military assets it wants in the Falklands, its their territory anyways.

Obviously an act of British imperialist aggresion designed to facilitate the restoration of the vast British South American colony of New Devon that Argentina fought so hard to escape from in the War of the Triple Alliance which was caused by British opium imports and the harsh exploitation of Argentina's precious corned-beef deposits.

Though, as usual, this is all a ploy of deception by the cunning piratical Brits to distract all international attention onto this seemingly titanic struggle. Meanwhile, they will steal the Shroud of Turin, the Parthenon, and in fact the whole city of Istanbul from right under everyones noses (to be sold to the Chinese) in order to fund their oil-conquests in Afghanistan.

Messi > Beckham. So I wouldn't be suprised if there is an upset this time around.

But in all seriousness, armed conflict would be bad policy.

Of course; yet its still amusing to see all this tension being hyped up from politicians and the media. I particularly get a kick out of the Falklands being referred to as 'imperialism' or 'colonialism'.

The funniest thing about this is that Argentina is itself an ex-Spanish colony and probably about 90% of them are descended from Europeans.

The whole recent "tension" over the Falklands is mainly small grievences between Argentina and Britain blown out of proportion by the media because of their desire to have something interesting to report over because it's the 30th anniversary of the Falklands expedition.

Though I do suppose that for the Brits, it's good that the media is making a big deal out of this so that they can feel that their military expenditures and egos are justified.

Our Militarily Imperialistic ego's are never sated!

On a serious note though, I don't see any war coming. A BBC correspondent in Argentina over the weekend asked locals if another war was inevitable, they answered no. Even if the Argentine government did (god forbid) push for war, they'd be thrown down quicker than the military junta were back in the 80's.

There is a difference between paying lip-service to Argentina and actually spending time, money and effort in supporting them and in turn deteriorating their relations with Britain

Sure, but the South American countries have great interest in standing up to Great Britain. To begin, I don't think there's any way that Great Britain would want to fight a war against an alliance of many South American nations. But primarily, it would be a wonderful political move for these leaders if they forced Britain to leave the Falklands.

I'm not saying this isn't actually the case, it's just contradicts previous indications.

But I wouldn't ever accuse leftists of being consistent anyways.
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. - James Madison

Why would any other South American nation risk it? Whats in it for them?

Falklands isn't going anywhere any time soon, it will remain British.

The same thing that's in it for the President of Argentina: Political popularity. They'd be seen as standing up to Western, capitalist imperialism.
