Default One of the best games ever made!

I just thought i should say this, that shogun 2 is one of the best if not the best game these people have ever made, every inch of it is done to perfection, the animations, voices, campaign map and fleets, etc... its actually level with rome total war in terms of epicness!

Well done, and thank you CA

It`s getting back on track. But as epic as Rome? Not really as Rome had the most of Western Europe to explore.

I do agree that FOTS was well implemented too. And, I must admit, I was negative about it when I saw the trailer before release.

If this guy's "back on track" means RTW/M2TW ai, unrealistic campaign map (decades to reach places between countries anyone?) oh and lets not forget the pink parthians.

Then TW is slated to be doomed. Oh and look as well, it appears that anything not Europe is not as epic.

Nevermind that this is the only strategy game out there EVER that renders both the Gempei, Sengoku and Boshin, thats from bow ships to ironclads. But noooooooooooooooo coz we dont understand coz its Japan. Sigh.

(Its clickable by the way....An S2 overhaul mod.)

Seriously. Click it. Its the only overhaul mod that's overhauling enough to bring out NEW clans

It's getting there, but a lack of diversity and modability kind of kills the replay value.

Thing about Rome is, people still say its one of the best games ever made, will Shogun 2 stand the test of time? Probably not. Not to the same extent anyway.

Twenty units of war hounds against twenty units of flaming pigs. But all of a sudden a hidden group of invisible Roman elite Arcani assassins reveals itself ! But what is this they are immobile and just bouncing up and down ?? Wow ! It looks like they've been charged by the giant men of the Hounds of Culann !

    What an epic battle, folks.

Bah. What I like about Shogun 2 is that it can show DENSELY PACKED amount of epicness in small packages like..........just showing Date Masamune.

Meanwhile, older games had to recruit at least more than a thousand men in one screen just to give off the vibe of "epic".

I agree that FotS is amazing. It completely redeemed Shogun in my eyes, because there's finally two very different methods of playing the same game

    I agree completely.

If you critically look at it I don't think it was as great as Shogun 2. It's just that Shogun 2 isn't such a great leap as Rome was for the series so people look back and remember how "fantastic" Rome was. Sure Rome might have covered a larger area which allowed for more diversity. There isn't much CA could do to diversify Shoguns units.
So yeah I agree with the OP Shogun 2 is probably the best TW ever made. Even though I too personally like Medieval and Roman timeperiod more, it still doesn't change the fact that Shogun is a better game.
Well said. Though I do still want a Rome II. Be nice to be able to play the game with all the new features baked in (replenishment, tech trees, etc)

my eternal thanks to the EB team for making R:TW such an epic game, and to TWC and all other modders for pushing the boundaries with each Total War title .

Mainly the leap from MTW I would say. The graphics just were a whole league better.
And Nostalgia? Maybe to some degree, yes.
But for my part, I very well remember when RTW came out and I got wet eyes... because THIS was the game I dreamed about when I was a boy playing games in the 1980s/early 1990s.
So I glorified RTW the very day it was released, without Nostalgia.

I dunno man, I enjoy vanilla Rome and vanilla Shogun just about the same (FotS gets a few extra points for naval battles, in S2 they were deathly boring.). But it just really comes back to, at least for me replay value. Rome has some, vanilla or otherwise. If I play one campaign as the Gauls, I'll be facing totally differently enemies in a totally different environment than if I was playing as then Seleucids. Shogun 2... From Shimazu (sp?) to Date its the same bloody thing. Didn't do it for me, FotS was better because of Ironclads and Gatling guns but I just get into it. Too redundant.

But alas, arguing over which Total War is the best is pointless because its really subjective.

Edit: I suppose looking at it an objective point of view Shogun 2 is probably better. Better AI + Naval Battles, still less fun imo though.

For me, unit variety is important but what makes the game shine is its depth of play and strategic development in design, both of which S2 does better than RTW. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed RTW, but after a while, I realised the unit variety was actually over hyped. Generally, there are only three types of factions in RTW: roman, barbarian or phalanx-heavy greek-style ones. While S2 also does not boast as much in unit variety, the strategic challenges and role-playing element make it enjoyable to the point I forget that all clans have access to the same units! But that's just my opinion, and I do agree that considering which TW is best is subjective.

I thought Shogun 2 was great when it was released..now? Now I think it was only good back then, but is great now. I cant believe how much life S2 still has and is now more epic than ever with all the DLCs and patches, especially the last patch with so many new features added for free its amazing. Frankly I thought no company in their right mind would implement features from their newest game to the old one without buying the new game. Combine that with new castles added some time ago and blood DLC it seems CA really listened to the community for developing S2 after launch.

P.S. I know I sound like a huge fan-boy here but I am really enjoying my current campaign

FoTS is an amazing game, technically, artisically, gameplaywise - it covers all bases. Rome suceeded precisely because it was epic in it's scope - the gameplay itself was wildly unbalanced, and historically it was a compelte and utter dogs breakfast - but the theme and setting is just so epically awesome that you can overlook all this because you can be Julius Caesar and kill all the gauls!!

Rome is indeed overrated, graphicly it was very good for its time, but gameplay was it was unbalanced as hell.

Like said, i think people glorify it for its era (roman era is very popular), the graphics, the elephants and the way you could mod it. although i have to agree i miss diversity in Shogun II (the main diversity is spread out over 3 different time periods, costing about €80-90 in total). so its time to zoom back out i think

I think a Rome 2 would lean more towards a more historically accurate setting.

I agree that Shogun 2, complete with the three eras, is the most complete total war to date and the most polished.

FotS, is the best Total war game to date. That's just it. And S2 and RotS are close behind. Rome was good, but people definetly tend to look back on it with rose colored glases on. (I say that as a person who still plays it frequently)

FOTS is great. I'm a fanboi for any game that achieves a nice level of intensity and flow and some challenges and surprises and is vaguely "historical" (whatever that means). I've played all the major
TW releases except Shogun(1) and Alexander. Rome and Med2 are of course classics, but I think FOTS pushes Shogun2 to nearly the same level of possibilities as Med2.

Which is why, it will be nice eventually, to get back to the Ancient Mediterranean or even the Age of Phillip II (of Spain) or even Byzantium or even the Crusades with all the ship effects and ranged fire of FOTS.

Oh! And I'm very glad the gloss is gone from things. I prefer the slightly grim look of FOTS.
