meh, bring some lancers and extraordinariis are done for good, I take this as you meant Pedites Extraordinarii
it's indeed painful in sieges though, although baiting the Romaioi to play on your terms (in open field) is easy

There are many AP units in the region though that can be used against Extraordinarii and are cheaper than them. Germanic and Illyrian clubmen, Bastarnae mercs, and most importantly Teceitos and Tekastos. Worgozez are also good because of the combination of AP attribute and fear effect. The challenge with those units is to avoid the javelins of the Extraordinarii.
The number one reason why facing any faction difficult is because of the EB script that gives them mnai. Ok, probably heavy-HA factions have a head start, but other than that it can be summed like the first sentence.
It's never easy to fight an army, that army goes to town and then the next turn they are full again even if they are in debt. It's also one of the reasons why blitzing is so effective.

This wont be the case in EB2 thanks to the recruitment pool system.
Yeah, but until EB2, we're stuck with cheating the system that cheats.
Also, as a sidenote, I hate M2TW. Not the engine, though. I also hate the merchant - useless unit. Kingdoms is a pretty good game for the novelty it brings.

If I increased the cost of extraordinarii could I make them less appealing to the computer? Do they choose them over principes because they have a better calculated strength/cost ratio?
actually if you raise the hastati and princeps numbers (with corresponding unit cost increase too), the AI will field them better
