Has anybody tried to avoid guns completely in FotS?
Do you think it could be done?
I'm thinking one would have to use DarthMod to actually stand a chance using only melee and arrows against rifles.
Any thoughts?![]()

Sabre cav, yari cav, some katana units and a pfew spear levies and i doubt you'll face too much resistance.
Your enemy don't only have guns, they have bombardment, Amstrong guns, gatting guns and revolver cavalry.
You have absolute zero chance to win in this game.
In my current campaign, using most of Radious' mods, I have several armies made up samurai, levies and a few artillery pieces.
The way to beat armies with a lot of firearms is to use the terrain and any hiding place and getting to the foe quickly, taking away his range advantage.
In melee samurai and even levies will beat those westernized sons of whores.
THE LEGENDARY TRADITIONALIST NO GUNPOWDER REPUBLIC CHALLENGE!
Holding and taking castles is easier with traditional units. As long as you castle hop and avoid open field battles, you'll have no problems even on legendary.
Can you still use artillery? I mean, those aren't technically guns...
i did it on medium aizo, was supereasy just using yari and cav
I find it's hardest to start out, taking the first initial provinces with just some spearmen. I wonder if it's within the "no gun rule" to just set the gunmen to 'melee' setting. Don't know if that would be useful though...
I was hoping to go "Samurai" all the way rather than just "no gunpowder" per se. In effect S2TW army builds. The lack of katana samurai cavalry hurts but can be overcome with a blind eye to sabre cavalry. The shrine and smith provinces and training camps become your friend as does any tech buff that increases speed. I found myslef wishing I could get some monks! But the "reject Westernisation and technology" game hurts on sea. On land the challenges can be overcome, but at sea from the mid game the "no tech" option can be a killer.
On the opposite side of the coin, full modernisation is horrific (in a good way). My stack of 2 revolver cav, 2 sabre cav, 2 armstrong guns and 6 imperial line infantry with kneel fire (plus an embedded foreign Veteran) got hit by 4 full stacks. "Oh no" I thought. About 30 minutes later my little army had suffered about 400 casualties, dealt out literally thousands, and two turns later the other faction begged for peace.
Tech and rifles are certainly compelling...
You can't avoid that your garrison levys will have rifles.

Wait for traditional unit mods... giving Boshin era Kachi with all the sengoku glory... Radious Unit Pack 3 will come out soon..
It is permitted to use Ironclads... No Ban on Steam... but you could only use Ramming Attacks...
Except someone mod Ironclads...with mangonels! throwing nonexplosive iron balls!
I tried that. I played Jozai on VH, and tried pulling a Katsumoto on them Western posers. I use only the best melee, the shogitai. Trust me, it wasnt fun... just trust me...
.
Lets just say the game didnt end well for me.![]()
I played the same campaign. I found it really fun and quite challenging, but in the end, I was victorious. Though I didn't go Republic and preferred to back the Shogun.
I didn't use a lot of shogitai though. My preferred was the Yari Ki. They're available early and reasonably priced, but most of all, their speed makes them excellent in outmanoeuvring rifle infantry.
I can beat the AI with only melee units by hiding units in the forests with archers in the open to force them to advance once they get close my melee units crush them and my cavalry attack those units from the rear to quickly route them. But against a human player it might go a bit differently especially if they had artillery.
