    Default Can't take settlements

So yeah...I am having a problem. I assault a settlement, defeat the defending army, capture the square, but when the timer runs out i get a "close defeat" and all my armies disappear... Had this thing happen three times in a row on two different settlements. I am playing Rome 0 turn campaign hard/hard. Something I am missing?

What's the flag behind the timer? Yours, or the enemy's?

Is there a single enemy soldier left somewhere in the 'square's' borders?

Normally, if you have captured the square completely, there's no problem - even if there are enemy units stuck up on walls because you've destroyed the wall either side of them. Otherwise, as soon as you've captured the square and all other enemy units are routing then the 'End Battle' selection will appear.

Play without the battle timer, I'm not really sure what it adds anyway other than annoyance when you lose a battle you knew you would win because of the timer.

It's useful when defending. The AI will occasionally, as I'm sure you've experienced, lock down and just chill out until you do something. An example would be it forces an AI to cross a bridge when attacking on a river tile. Or if it sallys forth to defend its settlement (So it is in fact attacking and you are defending) units can occasionally rout back to the city center and as aforementioned chill out, not returning to combat and leaving you stuck with the option of breeching the city or quitting and losing.

So on defense, I always find it wise to turn on the battle timer. On offense however it is rather useless.

Oh. I guess I just play battles more aggressively, I will always attack the AI if it lingers too long, but I guess in a defensive battle I can see your point.

I am playing without the timer, but it appears when I reach the square. It states that i need to capture the square before the timer expires. I capture the square. Then another timer appears stating that enemy has to recapture it or he will lose.

The flag behind the timer is mine (roman), the enemy doesn't recapture it (because there are no enemy units at all) and I get the 'close defeat" message... This is really confusing since I don't recall that happening on the older version of the mod :[

I figure it is some kind of bug. Since all my units disappear and enemy has all of his units back at 100% strength.

Uh, this happens every time? Do you have a save before that battle where it will happen? Does it happen every time? If so upload a copy of your save. I'd like to take a look O_o

I only used those two instances, not because they were the best I could come up with but the only ones I could come up with. I have really memories of losing my general, trapped in a city because he was pursuing a routing unit and he couldn't take the walls (so he couldn't leave. And I didn't have any siege equip so I couldn't get in... heroic death indeed...) and being forced to fight a superior force through a bridge despite being attacked because the AI stalled out half way.

Rough times that left strong memories I guess But yeah, 9/10 battle timer comes back to bite you.

We're talking about two different 'timers' here. In the 'Options' for a battle you can choose to to have NO battle timer...which means, the battle will last as long as it takes to either lose or win.

The 'timer' that comes up when you have captured the 'plaza', or the center of the city, only means that you have to hold it for 3 minutes (I think) to win. That timer has nothing to do with the Battle Timer. The Battle Timer is the thing with the hourglass in the lower left hand part of the battle interface. If it is slowly running out of 'sand', then you are using the Battle Timer. You have to win before it runs out, then.

Yes, I know this. I am playing without the hourglass timer. The 3-4 minute plaza timer is the one screwing me over. I have to hold it for 3-4 minutes like you said, but when I am at about 2 minute mark I get the "close defeat" battle resolution...

The more intense battles in RS II can take more than an hour for me so I have always had timer off.
