Russia population has fallen alot, its just that the Russians lead a third world life not much different that your average Syrian or Iranian but lead a first world mentality on procreation and life. The result is a high death rate and very low birth rate which in the west has proven unsustainable let alone in some place like Russia.

Russians have survived worse, but capital flight and the brain drain that opening of borders permits will make it a more impoverished place, as the cronyistic political system in place will drive away the aspiring middle class and shifting loyalties will frighten the upper class to prepare hefty nest eggs in the West.

The population of Russia is actually increasing now. While there has been a clear downward trend since the dissolution of the USSR, the population decline slowed over the past decade, stopped in 2009, and now the population is back to about 2005 levels and growing. Fertility is also back to 1991 levels or above. It took a while, but the future of Russia isn't so bad now.

Yes, as LSJ pointed out Russia's problems on the demographic ''area'' could very well go away now that the social, economic and political shock of the 90's is farther and farther away.

What is indeed disturbing for Russia as a society however is their heavy dependency on ''charismatic leaders'' or ''big-business oligarchies'' to maintain the federation in order and governed. Something that certainly brings it's own share of problems if we consider corruption or the chances of getting a bad leader making bad descisions(something that they have avoided with Putin and Medvedev but certainly suffered from with Yeltsin)
