Where exactly are they when they appear near Baghdad? North or South of the Tigris River? because i am trying to decide whether to defend in my cities or load 2-3 elite armies at the three bridges near Baghdad on the Tigris

iirc, they appear sort of North east, but I might be wrong. Just be prepared for one hell of a fight
Things I trust more than American conservatives:
Drinks from Bill Cosby, Flint Michigan tap water, Plane rides from Al Qaeda, Anything on the menu at Chipotle, Medical procedures from Mengele
I think they appear around 1214 (about turn 130-135 if you're playing 1 turn per year). They can pop up either north or south of the Caspian Sea.
When facing the Mongols, I've had the best luck with siege battles, the extra defense from towers really helps. Bridges are the next best place to fight them, but I always take a lot of causalities due to the excessive amount of missile units that the Mongols have. Regarding your question, in my experience, the Mongols have always appeared north of the Caspian sea, or directly north of Baghdad. I think it's random.
Basically they' appear both North and south of Baghdad , but , they'll have the bulk on one side and the only 2 or 3 stacks on the other. Whether they appear near Baghdad or Yerevan or Sarkel depends upon the faction you are playing and your strength. If you are too powerful for the early game they're sure to come in your area.

I've just had 2 stacks appear east of Yerevan, and 3 more a few turns later north-east of Bulgar.
