Papal states having greater army than the Timurids? :O

I'm playing the Turks on Hard campaign/hard battle. Some ruckuss must have happened in Italy by the time I got there: The Papal states owned all of it, except for Venice and Bologna (at the present I conquered sicily, and the venetian provinces). But I got terrified at the sight of the pope's armies gathering in Florence...somewhat 4-5 full stacks, with Swiss Guard, broken lances and all other heavily armoured elite troops you can think of. I took a look at the statistics, and they are the second military power (only pawned by me of course ^^) and their armies are significantly bigger than of the Timurids, who meanwhile invaded Russia (for my greatest joy).

HOW is this possible? Thoose 5-6-7 cities should definietly be insufficent to uphold that horrid force. How the hell is it even possible for the Papal States to become a superpower? :O

I seen some wierd crap to like papal states expanded towards the moores all the way to the capital lol only reason ididnt rape them yet is because i dont feel like being crusaded by everyone

I've seen this also but in around 200 campaigns played I've seen this rarely like maybe 20 times. Did you give him a region?


Edit: if the player gives the Papal state a city elsewhere of Rome the Papal state will start expanding, I've used this tatics to have a ally in the holy lands to help me counter the Mongols and Timurids invasions, a player could also do this to make his borders safe with a catholic enemy.

Watch out though, if not controlled, the Papal States have the ability to spread like wildfire

Yet it's scripted a bit like the SPQR in Rome was, if you give them another city-land-region they will develop like any other faction. If they stay in Rome they cannot do so they are like stuck like in the movie the village

Maybe the Pope is getting a lot of tributes from other nations... Or Rome makes a lot of money itself. I've never conquered it so I don't know Rome's economy

Rome has great income and the potential do become a naval power. But public order may be an issue since if you take it you are either from another religion or excommunicated. So its greatest power would be in the hands of the Pope.

The Mongols, Timurids, rebels and possibly the Aztecs don't pay upkeep. The other AI factions do.

the AI does pay for upkeep, but he gets extra cash every turn

Italy is a sickenly rich region thanks to all the sea trade. I should know, I'm playing the Papal States now and own Italy along with some islands. My lesser cities are 1000 or so, my more developed are 2400-3000+, and the majority of that money is sea trade.

It's more than possible for any Italian faction to go money crazy thanks to the fact that it's all cities over there.
