Default Install new power supply, disk drive stops working?

Quite a while ago I bought parts for a brand new desktop: a new power supply GPU, monitor, etc. but I found that once I replaced the power supply my disk drive stopped working. At the time it wasn't such a big deal, but I've been wanting to replay Medieval II again lately so I need my disk drive to work. :l

I've already checked all the wiring on the power supply, neither of the free wires fit into the remaining slot behind the disk drive. There's already one plug in the disk drive, but it connects to the motherboard (I think?) not the power supply. The disk drive worked with the crappy, default power supply, but that one was too weak for my GPU. I think the wattage on this one is...600? I can check if that would help find a solution.

Is it common for power supplies to not have a wire for the disk drive? Is it possible that I plugged something into the wrong area and have somehow had a functioning computer this whole time? Anything at all you can do to help me, TWC? D:

i'm confused if you rebuilt the rig you must have connected up the hard drive or at least one hard drive with an os on it.

an hdd needs to be connected via a power connector (molex) and usually a sata connector.

If the hard drive is old it may have the old type of power connector. They make converters for it and most power supplies come with one. I'm using my phone do I can't look up the details right now.

Yeah, I think the two free wires are a molex and a sata connector. Problem is, neither of them seem to have a place on the HDD to plug in. :l

Post a picture of your HDD connector.

Post two pictures, one of the back of your hd where all the plugs would go and two of the various cable ends that come from your power supply. You could also post a picture of the cable you're trying to connect to the hd from your mobo.

Apologies for not responding to my own thread, I've been really busy lately. >_<

Also I NEED this thing to work so I can re-install Medieval II. I've just started Reading A Song of Ice and Fire and Westeros: Total War looks insanely fun. D:

As soon as I figure out how to get this damn webcam to turn on without making a Skype call I'll oblige with pictures.

Do you have a cell phone with a camera? If so then post those pictures. That will be good enough. We just need to see the setup to make the right call.

But on the other side your drive may be wildly outdated. There is a device that should be able to solve any legacy issues with old HDD's and allow you to download and swap at will. It's made by Kingwin and is essentially an external HDD bus that will allow you to connect any older HDD's to your computer and copy that info to a newer drive. Here it is - Kingwin ez-connect USI-2535. It's powered externally and is easy as pie to use. This will allow you to copy any drives to your new HDD - even very old IDE drives. Good luck!

If you got a new PSU then maybe you got one with no molexs. But your DVD needs one, so you'd need to get one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SATA-to-Mole.../dp/B000ZMCYQG
