Aneas Tacticus, "On Siegecraft" 39.1-6 says "It is essential that those who are under siege should eploy devices such as the following. At the city gates and just inside them the should dig a ditch, leaving a passage on either side of it... the enemy who run in... because they do not know about the ditch, especially as it is concealed, will fall in and be immediately killed by those inside the city. Some of these men should be stationed in the passageways and at the ditch near the gate." He goes on to suggest that a portcullis be installed, and this be let down when the enemy have passed through the gate, to trap them inside the city and prevent other enemies from entering. Anyway, if you do use the gate staking stratagem you may now feel happier that is is not an exploit, but is in fact a ruse very similar to one recommended by ancient authors!!![]()
