Hope you get good harvests and build good trading/economical buildings. Thats really all there is to it.
Hi
In addition to the sound advice above I would add population. Lots of people. Tax collected goes up a bit as population but Trade income goes up greatly as populations increase.
Road upgrades wont help Island Rhodes.
All trade requires you to be on good terms with your trading partners. If Rhodes is at war with Halicarnassus and the Greek states it wont have the ability to trade with those regions. It will auto pick the next best routes..if any are available. So peace is good...but as this is RTW...I think owning the whole area would be better still.
Good governors for big trade cities will be those that have traits and a retinue with good management and tax skills. They may also have high influence which allows you to control public order and have higher tax rates.
Have your capital not too far away. This will reduce corruption thus increasing the income left for your treasury.

Ports are the greatest source of income. If you can build them, do. The more ports you have , teh more trade and therefore the more money. That's just between your faction though. Trade rights with others with ports will help loads too. Obviously mines are very useful and farms too. Farms generate income and increases the population that payes tax. However, the farms can cause your population to be huge later on with makes it hard to keep your city happy.
If you select a city and then open income/growth/happiness page (theres a button bottom left - i forget what its called). If you have a building in the building queue you can check your income in that area at present and the income when it is built (the potential icome bit is faded and possibly flashes). For with a port in the buiilding queue your income may be 550 for trade but when its done it will be 670. So that would be well worth building. Test this out with different buildings to see what will make most money.
Hopefully you can follow that![]()
Flashing icons mean what you will lose this turn due to certain decisions, such as building an extra unit in another settlement (which affects income, for example). Unrest, trade, admin...that sort of thing. Only faded-icons mean what you will gain in the future at some point (change the tax rate to the next one up or down, then back to what it was before, and you may find you are due to gain, say, this extra 100 income this turn rather than next turn).
Building farms can become a bit tricky if you play on RTW-BI. It may often cause your cities to rebel. That is why I do not build up my farms to the highest levels there. I hat rebellions and following them extermination.
From the pride and arrogance of the Romans nothing is sacred. But the vindictive gods are now at hand. On this spot we must either conquer, or die with glory (Boudiccas Speech, Tacitus, Annals, XIV, 35)
under Patronage of Emperor Dimitricus, Granddaughter of the Black Prince.
To add onto that: Beware of cities that already start with a high population increase, like Carthage or Alexandria, for those are already troubling cities to deal with. What's worse is that they sometimes have a high farm level, as well. There's really no cure for the unrest caused by population/squalor, other than to exterminate the population, capture a wonder to [temporarily, except for the Pyramids/Statue of Zeus] please them, or to take them over before they can expand so that you'll at least have the culture penalty lowered.Originally Posted by Boudicca
