I Keep On Getting Assassinated!

OK, so I'm playing as Hungary. Everything was going swimmingly. I had completed three crusades successfully, and had a few boss generals with every stat full or almost full. Then, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they all got assassinated within like four turns (my king included). I never once caught an assassin, so I guess every attempt they made was successful. WTF is up with this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening? I'm literally down to two generals and I have 20 regions. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating, and it would suck incredibly hard to lost my last two in this way and lose the game, which apart from these incidents has been one of my best campaigns. In case it matters, this is on VH.

Not quite sure how to defend against assassins...Keep the generals on the move, perhaps? Idk if surrounding them with more soldiers would help or not...


In any case, better get some captains to win some heroic victories so you can get some new people in...

Keep spies in your settlements and armies to detect the assassins.

Spies in the settlements/stacks reduce the chance of them being assassinated. You can also increase their Personal Security trait, but the only way I know to do this is by assassinating other factions generals.

Use a Razorback.

When you spot an Assassin with your spies, have someone counter assassinate him. If you're really pissed and want to get back at the AI, you can surround their assassin (or any agent that doesn't belong to you) with 8 units and/or impassible terrain (mountains, water, etc) and then move another unit onto the agent. It will instakill him because enemy agents don't have quite the same movement mechanics as armies, as I'm sure you've noticed. Note that this works both ways - I've lost a few spies and diplomats to the AI being derp. Not a lot, but still, it's kinda annoying when it happens to you.

In addition to spies, build towers at the edge of your territories to give you plenty of warning.

to get more generals, send out captains to fight rebel armies. Give them one or two more units and I guarantee you that they will get a "man of the hour" which promotes them to a general.

I did that in RTW when I got low on Family members. In this game it almost seems like I have too many family members at times.

dont let family members wander alone. the smaller the army, the higher the succesrate for assassinations

I think that only applies when you have less generals then regions, you could defeat the entire Mongol faction with a captain and he still wouldn't be promoted to general if you have too few regions.

thats very likely. cause in Rome and Medievall II the number of family members is in correlation with the number of provinces you own. In my last venice campaign, when i was consolidating rather than expanding for a while (preparing troops to face the mongols in the holy land) i had no births for quite a while (20-25 turns, maybe even more). then some FM died of old age, and a i got a lot of births again

Especially if you conquer fast at the start, you will see lot of births pop up

I have played some mods where I had double (at least) the number of Family members compared to provinces...It was ridiculous.

In my last Novgorod campaign on Stainless Steel. I had only one...my King! I forgot how I got him (I think it was through marriage) but he was very young and all my other generals were so old they just died off. I know I was scared for quite awhile if he died I lose! I was so cautious with him when I fought battles! I know a few times I literally would yell at the screen "Get outta there" "Get out of there now"!

Perhaps. But it was still ridiculous. And since you can't "disband" them I would have a ton of generals in each army.

I would just hire assassins of your own. Usually, assassinating an assassin is absurdly easy--even for a beginner assassin. Once you get rid of the current assassin swarm, you won't have much to worry about (the ai don't stick with the assassin thing very well). You know where the assassin assassinated your general, so pinpointing the assassins location shouldnt be much of an issue.
