Yea except the fact that the '300' spartans didnt face the romans but the persian hordes of Xerxes, its a good idea to include thermopylae on the battle map.
Personally I think the 300 spartans wouldnt stand a chance against the heavily armored roman legions instead of wood and paper armored persians. Let alone some ballistae bolts into the spartan ranks![]()
He might not be!
Remember the Spartans needed 300, the Romans only needed 3.......Horatio and his 2 chums!
And everyone also forgets the other Greeks that were with the Spartans.
That said, one-on-one, I would suggest that one Persian (conscripted and unwilling) would be beaten by one Roman (trained and experienced in war), who would be beaten by one Spartan (lived and breathed warfare); who would then probably be killed by one Gladiator (who killed or died and trained only for one-on-one combat).
But Thermopylae was unusual and not really something that can be gamed in such a simulation. Try Warhammer Hero Rules (something like Lord of the Rings at Helm's Deep and the Gimli-bomb) instead.![]()
A) Romans had the technological superiority that one of the touchstones of Spartan might a century earlier
B) Why would the Romans go to Thermopylae at all.

Thermopylae is the "gate" into Peloponnese. Any army hoping for a quick march into or out of mainland Greece has to go through it. Heck, even the German had to battle their way through the pass during WWII.
There were very definitely some 700 Lacdemonians (sp) with them until near the end, not to mention the others that were in the mountains behind (that ran off when the Persians came.....).
But a Guard of '300' was a normal number earlier and became something of a legend after - it's a very recurring number for an elite unit of the period.
Although I think 300 Spartans would lose to thousands of Romans if they ever fought at Thermopylae, I think it'd still be a fun fight and I think it'd be cool to have Thermopylae as a battle map.
There is Termopylae in custom battles actually. I wonder why isn't there that narrow mountain passage instead of those hills or whatever there is. It would be fun to fight that battle.
Spartans are so overrated -_-
The Greek force was numbered almost at 10.000, but the one that stayed behind, after the Persians finally managed to outflank the greek host, was indeed 300 Spartans ALONG with a few hundreds of other greeks from different city-states.
People still use the movie as a source it seems.
If you think that Spartans went into battle in the fashion that the movie portrays them, then you're mistaken.
Also there weren't more than 250.000 persians. The numbers were more around 100.000.
And the movie portrays the battle as the 300 Spartans doing most of the battle most of the time, which is wrong.
Portrayal of the Immortals units is ridiculous.
Need i go on?

There is definitely a "myth of Sparta" and the silly movie just created even more of an opaque miasma around the whole subject. And the Spartans would've loved it! They encouraged the myth as much as anyone. However, I would not underrate the Spartans either.
This. The pass should be represented.
