Three inmates die in Guantanamo

Three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have died in what appears to have been a joint suicide pact, officials said.

It was not immediately clear when the inmates - two Saudis and a Yemeni - died, the US military said.

They "were found unresponsive and not breathing in their cells by guards".

The US holds about 460 men at the facility on suspicion of links to Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda organisation and the Taleban ex-leaders of Afghanistan.

Well, let's suppose you are innocent (because everyone is until proven quilty, right?) and you are held in isolation for five years, without trial and without knowing the accusations or have access to legal representation.

Then you commit suicide. Your fault, right?

This whole situation is one of the great travesties in this 'War on Terror'. When you are suspected of being a terrorist, you are guilty until proven innocent - and there is no hurry, it seems, to find out exactly which of those you are.

Have you read about previous reports about the prison? They can't even have long handled toothbrush...maybe Time's exaggerating, but dude, not even plastic forks or spoons. I don't think suicide is really that possible under that form of surveillance.

The story is sad enough without your baseless, factless 'theory' that the US somehow killed the three which is basically what you are saying. As Garb pointed out someone in prison for 5 years without trial and not clarity on their future would certainly make one consider suicide.

Someone set on killing themselves will find a method to do so, if I remember correctly the Times article said they were broken up into 3 groups those that cooperated and were given a bit more flexibility then the ones who didnt so perhaps they were part of that group which had access to more items then the others.

If people applied that both ways then yes but they dont. The guys in Gitmo are innocent until proven to guilty to some and guilty by default to others and ironically you can reverse that opinion when you talk about Bush and Blair. Generally the same people who think the ones in Gitmo are innocent til proven guilty would gladly label Bush and Blair guilty of lying (and worse) about the whole mess from prisoner detainment to Iraq. Go figure
