Default Thoughts on the Jozai faction.

Has anybody used these guys yet? I have a Satsuma campaign ATM, but it is going rather too well, so it isn't that interesting. Frankly I'm sympathetic to the Shogunate and am trying to decide on the faction to play and support them.

I had an earlier first campaign with the Nagaoka and everything went to , I kinda soured on them and I don't want the horrible temptation of Sado always there...so it's between the Jozai and the Aizu. The Jozai seem interesting, but I don't know much about Yugeketai or whatever they are...Aizu seems to be hardcore traditionalist...and I want to dabble in guns and good stuff.

How have your campaigns gone with those two factions...are the Jozai fun?

I'll put it this way: The ability to ressuply your army in enemy territory is priceless. It allows for epic movments on the campaign map.

As for their special unit: The one you get at the beggining...keep it alive, because they are amazing. Solid accuracy, reload, and superior range.

You start allied with Edo, and actually do have a pretty critical position, as it will be up to you to stop naval thrusts up the coast by the imperial clans, so getting a decent navy out is important (one of the provinces close to you has copper so you can get copper plated ships pretty early.
    Also, their color is sexy.

I highly recommend them, extremly fun clan to play as. Make sure to make alliances with at least two clans in the north, ones that can be easily connected with your territory (the northern most shogun clan on honshu and the azui are mine, the matsummune came latter). Their seems to be an issue with clans refusing to accept your offers for an alliance no matter your relations, so just wait for them to come to you.

I started with them, because I liked the blue colors and the bonuses. It was fun, but I made the rookie mistake of ignoring my navy like I used to in S2TW. The yellow clan(whoever they are) above Aizu wiped out Aizo and had all of Northern Japan when they came knocking at my door. I had a measely 4 provinces. They basically eroded my economy with their naval superiority.

It wasn't boring at all, as there were quite a few potential enemies from multiple directions. Started at war and stayed that way all the way until I quit the campaign. I still love the uniform color though.

I played Nagaoka and Jozai. I like Jozai best but again I forgot to beef up my navy and had a hard time deciding which techs to learn. I've started them again now. It's a bit tempting to grab Edo but the consequences might be severe. It was easy to get Sado btw with Nagaoka .They kept putting their main army on a ship for the mainland so I sank it and grabbed the island and the gold

Yeah, well in my campaign I thought I had my 4 provinces all shored up so I took most of my men over to sado and while besieging it 3 of the provinces rebelled...it was a nightmare.

thanks for the tips guys, if anybody has more, don't be shy.

I have been playing an Aizu campaign and trust me,you will have plenty of modern weapons to play with Thier four faction specific units are all modern warfare based but have a nice melee score as well so you still get the best of both worlds.

I'm worried they will be too hard...I'm good at fighting and tactics, but in grand strategy I am not so good. I want something in between the boringly easy and the very difficult...why I thought Jozai would be better for me than Aizu.

I haven't really played much STW2...I played it for a couple months after release and stopped...I could probably pick up RTW or MTW1 and win blindfolded from playing them an embarrassingly long amount of time, I just haven't played enough of this to be confident.

Don't underestimate their starting special unit, I forget its name. Their ability to remain hidden while shooting is amazing. But then again, that is only coming from the experience of a couple actual battles fought on the map.

The times I did use them though I would place them in some bushes or trees outside of my deployment zone and they would just spend the whole battle unloading all their ammo into the enemy army. All four times I used them, they were never spotted and were able to just fire away and score the most kills of any unit on my side.

Wait, who are you talking about?

Because that sounds awesome. I hope it's Jozai. The ability to reinforce units anywhere is just..... Great.

The Yugekitai is awesome. You start with one company, and i have kept them alive for around 190 rounds now, and when i quell all the rebellions, i will get the tech to get more(Military Academy is needed first), as im getting all the happiness techs at the moment. But you can easily support them with regular sharpshooters, they just gotta move swift.

They can spawn almost everywhere, except for the enemy spawn(The boundary is a little further away, than the real spawn location) like the kisho ninjas and the snipers in The Great War mod.

Can the Jozai enlist the Shinsengumi from the start????Or do they start with a unit of Shinsengumi like Aizu???just wondering if it is Aizu specific(historically makes sense) or if it is a Shogunate thing

They cannot, they don't start with one either...you start with a shinobi.

Im playing as them, went independant, but forgot to build enough navy, only had one full navy, which were holed up at Hokkaido, when realm divide came. The initial Republic period was hard, but i managed to pull it off, when i looted Edo and Omi to rebuild my farms, ports and inns.

Just go for them, i certainly will be playing as them again.

hmmm, interesting, and disheartening.I was hoping to actually use the Jozai and see the Shinsengumi properly coloured, for as it stands now they are palette swapped to match the Aizu,so their haori is black. While this is not entirely incorrect,I prefer their more iconic look of Light blue and white

What clan gets the Yugekitai at the start? They sound awesome. If it's the same clan that can resupply in enemy territory I think I found my next clan as well after I finish my Tosa campaign.

Yeah, the Jozai get one at the beginning. I don't know how the other guy went 190 rounds without getting the techs and buildings to make them.

Well, that was a mistake, i did actually have a bunch of them, and the military academy in my core provinces, but my main focus were on the fronts(Hokkaido and Kyoto), I forgot they were a tech earlier than Modern Armies, which i didn't have at that time

On the special units, do you have to start as the faction to get them? Or can you capture the home province to get the special units? Like Diplomacy custom map in Starcraft, if anyone knows that reference.

Playing them now in a VH campaign (Satsuma on Hard was an absolute doddle), loving them so far.

As mentioned the Yugekitai are pure class, being able to pour fire into an enemy's rear without even being detected is just insane. I usually have a main body of traditional units with a couple of levies/line and let the AI converge on it, banzai charge their front line and simultaneously spring the Yugekitai trap...and watch the body count hit the roof.

The Yugekitai are also great when attacking, I've found the 150 range and solid stats mean they'll serve as solid front line infantry early to mid game. As a specialist unit you really should be making the ability to train them in number a priority.
