As a long-campaign win nears for my Scots, the Venetians suddenly rat on me for no reason and turn up outside Vienna with a large army and some artillery. I hastily put together a relief column, but it's two turns away, and before it can arrive, the besiegers assault. We man the walls, but without much hope, although as the enemy bombards and trebuchet are doing their part, we at least hide behind the invulnerable parts so the artillery can't touch us.
That part works out at least, though about half my defenders are pike militia and I'm not expecting great things of them in hand to hand. Soon the walls have four or five big holes in them - at least that will simplify things for the relief column - and we sit tight and wait...
And wait...
And wait.........
And the AI completely forgets to send the foot troops in, and we sure as hell aren't going to disturb its equilibrium. The commander mutters "Don't even fart, lads... or if you must, make sure you spread your arsecheeks first."
Time runs out (another reason for not having infinite time in sieges) and up pops the message "Close Victory". We lost one man (unfortunately clipped by a bombard round as he was climbing down from the gatehouse), the enemy none, and the siege was broken. At which point the relieved defenders cheer as the relief column charges by in pursuit of the indecisive Venetians.![]()
