Live, Enslave, Exterminate?

I've been exterminating every city I conquer. I can use the extra income and I've noticed a few times when Enslaving the Carthaginians my popularity goes way down in my settlements.

What are the benefits to each besides the obvious income? I'm about to take Alexandria and I'm not sure what to do with the Egyptians.

Well my decisions are population based.

If town has <1300 population, Live
<4000 population, Enslave
Everything else exterminate.

Extermination and enslavement helps against public disorder. Extermination a lot more than enslavement.

Live - get some money, but you keep most of the people alive in the city.

Enslave - you get more money then the live option, but you ensalve alot of people and more people die.

Exterminate - you get the most money out of all the options, but you kill most of the people.

I would say pretty much all the General Sun just said. If they hae a small population, keep em alive, it proves useful later on. If they are above that but still are a bit uneasy with your new rule, enslave. Then exterminate whenever the population is ok and you need public order. Also keep in mind that you should check the population level and see how close the city is to growing. You might not want to kill everyone when a city is about to grow.

Good advice. I do roughly the same. I am a little more lenient in the early game and with towns of my own culture or when quickly recapturing a settlement that was recently taken away from me, or when playing Barbarian (e.g., Gaul), when high population early in the game is a very good thing. I am more quick to exterminate in the later game and when the settlement is farther away, or is Barbarian (when I am playing an "advanced" culture like Romans/Carthage). Egypt, being far away, a different culture, AND usually a late game rival with large cities, typically gets blanket exterminations from me.

Exterminate all the way unless the city can be held with a small force.

Enslaving seems to cause unrest and lots of rebels to appear near the town.

You are probably talking about net income. Yes, you will see this but it is not a good thing. The net income you see for the city is after military support is taken out. Military support allocated to the city is figured pro rata, based on city population.

So, a smaller city will have less "military tax" (NOT the same as the tax rate that you have control over in the settlement "contruction" screen); and therefore will typically appear to have a better net income. However, that smaller city is not generating more revenue; in fact, it is typically generating less. So you are often in a worse financial position. You have simply shifted the military "tax" away from this city, and now ALL your other settlements will appear to perform a little more poorly in order to take up the slack.

However, as has been stated, there are often reasons to go ahead and exterminate anyway, even if it lowers your income.

personnaly exterminate. Ecspecially if youre british because they conquer lots of towns and with out enslaving a couple of gaelic settlements they take ages to develop. Eterminate when they rebel against your order to teach them a listen. When i reclaim a settlement for my empire i occupy because they were former citizens.

I'd say it depends on your empire, early in the game its good to enslave to advance quickly in your cities , later on , exterminate to avoid rebelions or if you need the money. and i almost never ocupy unless its a very small rebel settlement of my culture.

If it is then the Egyptian home lands will be a long way from your capital. Coupled with their high populations (and population growth rates) I predict these cities will always be difficult to control. Too many puplic order penalties. So you put on low tax..and population grows some more. Eventually, perhaps immediately, they riot and rebel.

So exterminate and put tax as high as possible. Build public order buildings immediately and hire peasants from the population for garrison duty.

Currently I am playing Egypt and am approaching Italy. I am the other way around from you faction wise. I will exterminate.

why people exterminate egypt is because its the hardest faction to occopy so im destroying temples to put saturn ones up for law, building public orders and when a plague hits these huge cities is a god as i was focused in spain and africa before taking egypt the have high level cities

Or role play it and only exterminate when you've got a real hatred for your foe!
I tend to exterminate most of the time anyway. It's not worth the hassle with unrest for the most part.

But the thing is, is there a way to exterminate or enslave after you have already chosen an option? Because that would prove handy if one of your new settlements had riots a few years down the road.
