Mine would have to be Full Metal Jacket. Well really its the only Nam film ive seen. So what is your favourite film set in the Vietnam War? And how are films like Platoon and Apocalypse Now?

It's sort of a tie between Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Although Apocalypse Now isn't totally about 'nam (it's based on the book Heart of Darkness I believe.)
But I think Platoon just about edges it.

A great movie but mostly for its portrayal of Marine bootcamp. I like the Boys in Company C. It also stars SGT Ermee as a DI. If youve never seen it I suggest you do.

And "Forrest Gump" isn't even a real vietnam war movie...

But anyway, I prefer "Full Metal Jacket", but the whole thing, not just boot camp. I really don't know why so many people don't like the second part.

Apocalypse Now. The helicopter scene (Ride of the Valkyries et al) must be one of the most iconic moments from a war film ever, and one of the most recognisable.

Now I didnt say I didnt like the second part. However as a former Marine who went through bootcamp in 68 and Nam in 71 Id have to say the first part was a lot more realistic.

Well I wasn't adressing you specifically, but it's something I generally noticed. A lot of people saying how "genious" the first part is and how weak the second, which I don't understand really. I don't know how realistic the battle for hue is portrayed, but I've heard it looks very realistic with Kubrick having managed to pretty much recreate what Hue looked like.

Yeah, my dad's stories about boot camp line up pretty well with Full Metal Jacket, except for the fat crazy guy.

"Casualties of War" and "Apocalypse Now".

I remember taking my girlfriend to see Apocalypse Now, had no idea it was such a high-powered film. She thought she was going to see something from Disney.

Casulties of War was a good story, with a plausible ending..

    That one is great.

Their is also Firebase Gloria, i thought i had seen all the great vietnam movies until i saw that one. Its another one with Ermee, lol. Probably his best and hes the main character. I'd definately recommend that one.

If you like any of the movies mentioned its something to look up.

Firebase gloria is usually not mentioned only because its not on TV often so a lot of people havn't seen it.

Platoon is good. Apocylpse Now is my favorite though.

Platoon, it did a good job explaining the Vietnam War although it wasn't the most realistic Vietnam movie out there.

Although I don't condone violence on such a huge and pointless scale as the Vietnam War, I liked Apocalypse Now. Philosophical in its craziness.

Full Metal Jacket or Platoon for me.

While Apocalypse Now is however one of my favorite films of all time, its not a Vietnam war film in my mind. It's not really to do with the conflict, but more the darkness of a mans heart. Fantastic film really. Vietnam is just the setting. They could have set it in just about anywhere with a river and crazy people, and it would have worked just the same. Although the beach assault scene is yet the best Vietnam battle scene ever in my opinion....bah! I'm being ambiguous.
