well people generally debate whether it was Northern India or Anatolia (rather than Armenia, really. But hey we're kinda right there.) as the homeland of Indo-European languages.

It was my understanding however that most of what we do know by way of archeology was indeed done under the soviets. Obviously some of their techniques might have been a little sloppy or perhaps even destructive but it was still done.

Though yes you are correct about Archeology in Turkey. This does not apply merely to Armenians: There is a massive amount of bureaucracy for archeologists who want to do any kind of work in Turkey, it can take years.

In the meantime, I'd suggest Richard Hovanissians "The Armenian People from ancient to Modern Times" (volume I is what contains information about the early periods, aka, just what we know from archeology and written sources and linguistic analysis) and Bournoutian's "Tigranes II and Rome" among other books. Great reads with a lot of information.

Actually, the first book I've mentioned is on googlebooks. Look it up: the volume on googlebooks is the same edition as the one I have (previously, it was an older edition that was online, and it lacked any of the helpful and detailed maps that are in the book, but now it has them!).
