Buggy Phalanx

I was playing as the Seleucid Empire and I realized my phalanx was very buggy and useless. Elite Phalangites couldn't withstand a cavalry charge even from medium cavalry. Armenian medium cavalry destroys my phalanx from the FRONT in urban combat situation(so no powerful charges), and then my phalangites die like noobs. Beside that, my phalanx can't fight the proper way. Many soldiers from the firts line just throw away their spears and start fighting with their swords. Sometimes a phalanx turn itself on 90 degree to the enemy or even worse, all of the phalangites throw away their spears with no real reason. Armenian or Parthian Heavy Cavalry can deal with my phalanx from the front , kill everyone with little casualties. WTF? I thought the phalanx should have a bonus versus cavalry?!!! I know, heavy catapharcts are really heavy and its not easy to pull them from their horses, which are also armored, but medium cavalry?? Thats not logical. It seems phalanx is just buggy.

I used to know this, but I haven't played vanilla rome for ages, and nor did I play a greek nation in mods. So I simply forgot the phalanx was buggy.

However it is a fact, Phalanxes on RTW and BI are a bit ed up.

I hate it when the formations get all messed up in general, with a several people a few feet ahead of the main line...kind of messes with it as well.

Are phalanxes that much better in Alexander? I understand they no longer perform those 90° turns during engagement, are there other improvements? I'm still with BI, if phalanxes are really fixed in Alexander, I might consider getting it.
